Reality vs. AI - “Raise your right hand. Do you swear or affirm ….?” 🤚🏾

A Virginia notary issues an oath or affirmation (a jurat) to legally compel a signer to swear to the truthfulness of a document's contents, usually for affidavits, depositions, or sworn statements. This act adds a layer of legal accountability, as it subjects the signer to perjury laws if they lie.

✔️Purpose of the Act: The primary goal is to ensure the signer is telling the truth, and it is a required component of a "jurat" (or "verification upon oath or affirmation").

✔️Legal Significance: It elevates a document from a mere statement to a sworn, legally binding statement.

✔️When it's Used: It is required for documents where sworn truthfulness is needed, such as affidavits, depositions, and official testimonies.

✔️Oath vs. Affirmation: An oath is a pledge to a higher power, while an affirmation is a pledge based on personal honor; both have the same legal effect.

✔️Procedure: The signer must appear in person before the notary, be properly identified, and swear/affirm before signing.
