Fun to hear it from doulas perspective

When one of my favorite midwife friends, Spiral Path Midwifery, calls you at 12:28 am and says “GO. NOW.” You go. IMMEDIATELY. I jumped out of bed, got dressed, and hit the road…That’s how the birth started for . I arrived after a 40 minute drive believing my client was in transition based on what I was seeing. After a little bit of time and contractions one on top of another at 2:30 am, the midwife checked and my client was 100% effaced (yay!), but 2 cm dilated, and Baby was pretty low. Based on the contraction pattern we believed Baby was malpositioned and the midwife had her strategy on what positions to do next, which I was in charge of while my dear friend (the midwife) got a much needed nap. After I had finished the positions recommended by the midwife, I went ahead and suggested we try some acupressure protocols to rotate Baby and then I did some pressure points to help with dilation. At 4:18 am, my client said she needed to push, so I called the midwife who came back in and asked if she could check again. Y’all. I was hopeful, but didn’t expect my client to be COMPLETE at just barely 2 hours later. This was my first time seeing a client progress that fast and this was for her first baby!

Just how she progressed quickly, with pushing there were moments I wasn’t even sure she was pushing, but she was seriously so amazing! I took a beautiful serene photo at 6 am and then 2 minutes later the midwife said “Head’s out!” And Baby was born!

Not only that, but I was able to witness a moment for me of seeing a Baby born en caul. En Caul births are special and in many cultures are considered lucky. I’ve also heard it referred to as a “mermaid’s purse” and that sailors used to save the caul, dry it out, and wear it as a charm to help them get home safely. Either way, I’m tempted to buy a lotto ticket today. This was also the first birth where a midwife asked me to sign the commemorative birth certificate, which was such an honor for me. 🥰

Baby was born at 6:02 am weighing 5 lbs 12 oz and 18.5 inches long after Mama was in active labor for roughly 6 hours with her FIRST baby! She’s a beautiful little baby with a full head of hair! It was a beautiful birth. They’re ALL beautiful births.

🌀Reframing Pain in Labor 🌀

Let’s talk about something that gets glossed over way too often: birth is intense. Sometimes it’s powerful. Sometimes it’s pressure. Sometimes it’s painful. And all of that can be true without something being wrong.

There’s a huge difference between pathological pain (“I broke my arm”) and physiological pain (contractions moving a baby down). One signals danger—the other signals progress.
When we understand birth as a physiological process, we can tap into our body’s built-in ways of coping: endorphins, movement, breath, and support. We stop focusing on fear, and instead tune into our own power.

We’re not here to promise a pain-free, or****ic birth. We’re here to tell the truth—with compassion, science, and reverence for your experience.

✨ More on this soon. Keep rocking your pregnancy. You’ve got this. 💪💙

✨ Birth Isn’t a Performance. It’s a Rite of Passage. ✨

We need to stop selling the idea that birth will be pain-free or or****ic if you just try hard enough.

Not only is that untrue—it’s harmful.

When we promise bliss and perfection, and a woman ends up with pain, struggle, or complications, she’s left not just with a hard birth but with the belief that she failed. That her body failed. That she wasn’t strong or “aligned” or positive enough.

And that creates trauma.

Yes, birth can be powerful, even ecstatic. But it can also be long, raw, overwhelming, and unpredictable. And none of that means you did it wrong.

You don’t manifest your ideal birth by gritting your teeth and visualizing harder. You prepare, you learn, you surrender—and then you meet what comes with all the strength and support you have.

Let’s hold space for the full spectrum of birth—not just the curated highlight reel. ❤️‍🔥

✨ Collaboration over competition. Safety over ego. Care over fear.

This is what it looks like when community birth and hospital birth work together.

In this photo, it’s me and a receiving nurse who truly gets it. Who doesn’t see a transfer as failure or as “giving up,” but as using the right tool at the right time. And specifically this nurse is working to provide a safe place for out of hospital providers and their clients to safely transfer without fear of judgment or backlash.

We both believe families deserve continuity of care, clear communication, and a safe space to land when birth asks us for more than home can offer.

Our shared goal?
🌀 Respect.
🌀 Safety.
🌀 Seamless care that puts the birthing person at the center, even when plans change.

I’m so grateful for nurses and providers who treat out-of-hospital clients—and their midwives—with respect and partnership. Together, we’re building better systems of care, one birth at a time

🌀 Atypical Presentation of Pre-eclampsia: Awareness Without Fear 🌀

One of the foundations of midwifery care is education and partnership. It’s not just about supporting a vision for physiologic birth—it’s also about learning to recognize when things need medical attention before they become emergencies.

Pre-eclampsia doesn’t always show up in textbook ways. Sometimes it’s not high blood pressure or classic labs right away. It can begin with vague symptoms like persistent headache, visual changes, unusual swelling, or a gut feeling that something is off.

Our goal in midwifery care is to increase your awareness without feeding fear. We want you to know what to watch for, so you can act early and confidently. It’s not about catastrophizing—it’s about being informed so you can make timely decisions that keep you and your baby safe.

✨ I want to take a moment to praise this client for truly listening to her body and her intuition. For not dismissing her symptoms or gaslighting herself. For reaching out and allowing us to talk through next steps. And for trusting in our plan to shift care to the hospital team when needed—even though it meant changing the vision she had for her birth.

This is the heart of good care: mutual trust, shared knowledge, and flexible planning. It’s why midwifery care doesn’t end at the threshold of a hospital—it guides you there when it’s the safest path.

To all my clients: thank you for trusting me to walk this path with you, wherever it leads.💙💙

So so proud of what you accomplished

A sweet gift from a client—plus a gift certificate to a drink spot dangerously close to my office that she introduced me to! Thank you SO SO much. 🥹🧋

One of the things I cherish most about midwifery is the real, lasting relationships I build with the families I serve. It’s so much more than appointments and charts—it’s connection, trust, and often… friendship.

Saying goodbye at 6 weeks is always a little hard, so I remind clients: we don’t have to lose touch. There’s social media, coffee dates, and continued connection.

This kind of closeness just isn’t something you get in most OB settings—and I feel so lucky that it’s part of this path. 💛

🌿 One supplement won’t fix everything — and that’s okay.

Feeling frustrated that you’re taking iron or vitamin D and still not feeling like yourself? You’re not doing it wrong.

The truth is, your body works like a symphony — hydration, movement, hormones, gut health, and nutrients all play together. Taking a supplement is one instrument, but it needs the rest of the orchestra to create real harmony.

✨ Iron needs vitamin C.
✨ Vitamin D needs healthy fats, magnesium, and hormone support.
✨ Your body needs movement and hydration to use what you’re giving it.

This isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about gently layering support, one step at a time.

You’re doing more than you think. Keep going. Your body is listening. 💛

This was so, so fun. (The birth was too. 🤣)
Shoutout to for capturing the sheer joy on my face during this surprise encounter 💚

Life update: I’ve been to three births in three days — only one of them was mine.
Midwifery life is wild, wonderful, and full of unexpected guests. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The words “failed” do not belong anywhere in conversation about pregnancy, birth or postpartum 🙅🏽‍♀️

We have midwives, hospitals, birth centers, OBGYN’s and MFMs for good reason! In a percentage of cases, they are all very much needed 🧑🏼‍⚕️👩🏽‍⚕️👨🏾‍⚕️ we as birth workers and families are GRATEFUL for these resources being readily available to families when they are truly needed.

The #1 cause of home birth transfers is maternal exhaustion. This is why it is essential to rest, hydrate and nourish your body during early labor. A hospital transfer from a homebirth is by no means a failure. It is the responsible, proper use of the resources that are available to keep families safe. Please don’t place this in a negative light.💜💡
