Virginia allocated $2.5M to address Black maternal health. The organizations who fought for that funding, trained the birth workers, and did the community work for years? Denied.

The grant process — from design to selection — happened entirely under the Youngkin administration, overseen by then-VDH Commissioner Dr. Karen Shelton and HHR Secretary Janet Kelly. The same administration that quietly removed this program from the state budget on their way out the door.

Black Maternal Health Week is HERE — and we kicked it off right at the Color Carnival in Lynchburg! 🎉

In addition to eats, treats, and of course — line dancing with our girl Dana Williams (per usual 🤣) baby bundles went out to new and expecting parents and our color crew pulled up in full Secret Service mode to support the community 🕶️

And in honor of Black Doula Day — we celebrate and uplift the incredible doulas showing up every day for Black birthing people. Your work is sacred. Thank you for showing up today and everyday.

Special shout out to DeVonda N Chilton for always pulling the strings bts and of course our Chief in Command — Kenda Denia for driving this colorful mission forward.
