Today, we are grateful to share a powerful column written by writer, author, disability advocate, and hypoparathyroidism patient Heather Novak.

In describing her rare disease, Heather describes something many people outside the hashtag community may not fully understand — the constant uncertainty of living with calcium levels that can shift without warning.

The “Are my symptoms hospital bad?” group chats.
The guessing game of weekend decisions.
The reality that knowing your calcium level still requires a lab visit and waiting for results.

Her voice captures why innovation in this space matters so deeply.
Thank you, Heather, for sharing your experience so honestly.

Today is Rare Disease Day — and Tralyte Health is now live on Wefunder, an equity crowdfunding platform that allows individuals to invest in early-stage companies.

For people living with hypoparathyroidism and other rare conditions, “awareness” isn’t abstract — it’s daily reality. It’s uncertainty. It’s lab visits. It’s weekend decisions about whether symptoms are serious enough for the emergency department.

Rare Disease Day is about recognizing that reality and advancing solutions.

Rare Disease Day is about recognizing that reality — and advancing solutions.

This week, we launched our Wefunder campaign to support development of our first alpha prototype for a home calcium monitor. Community investment will help accelerate this work and bring better tools to patients living with hypopara and other conditions involving calcium imbalance.

We have received — and are grateful for — early-stage support from Activation Capital, Virginia IPC, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Innovation in rare disease requires persistence and community momentum. Today, we recognize the rare community and take a concrete step from awareness to action.
