Does your lower back bother you when you are deadlifting?

Try this:
Stand with your feet under your hips and your knees straight.
Bend over and let your hands drop to the floor as far as they are able to.

If you can’t touch the ground or you feel anything else besides stretching in your hamstrings, you have a flexibility limitation that could be the cause of your low back pain.

I’ll make another post soon with some movements that can help gain proper range of motion. Until it’s fixed though, I’d recommend doing elevated deadlifts so you’re not forcing yourself into positions that you don’t currently own.

We’re you FULL or LIMITED in this flexibility test??

Testimonial from a former client of mine that had been dealing with pain for the past 20 years!!⬇️⬇️

“I am a 53-year-old woman that was referred to try Tim Garner as a personal trainer for not only my strength, flexibility, but my joint pain also. I was in pain 24/7 in both knees and shoulders for 20 years. Surgery was not an option for me either. I met and trained with Tim and after just a few months, I was able to sleep with my arm under my head without pain and started to have hope to be pain free overall. I always enjoyed every session we had together and I am able to do so many daily life skills and activities without pain. I truly believe that training with him is worth the time.”

I have worked as a coach for nearly 15 years.

In the fitness world, I’ve coached CrossFit, Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, youth strength and conditioning, general fitness, injury improvement, and nutrition.

I also coached tennis at the youth, adult, and collegiate level for several years.

My main focus for the past few years has been helping people get out of pain without going to the doctor!

Helping people realize that they don’t need to live with pain day after day and that there are ways to fix it is a huge passion of mine.

When ever I get the question “why does my ________ hurt?”, my answer is always, “it depends.”

For example, if you have shoulder pain, it could be from a limitation in flexibility, mobility, a strength imbalance, or stability in the shoulder. Or it could be none of those and it could be because you have tight ankles and you’re trying to do an overhead squat and compensating by taking your shoulders way farther back than they’re meant to go!

Through assessing your flexibility, joint by joint and thorough strength balance testing, we’re able to find specifically where the limitations are that could be causing the pain and be able to come up with the right plan to fix it!

What’s really cool is that I’m able to coach people in person and online! So if you have some pain you’re dealing with, let me know! I’d love to help you get rid of it if I’m able to!

Unilateral vs Bilateral Movements

- Single leg squat vs two leg squat
- 1-arm shoulder press with a dumbbell vs two arm shoulder press with a barbell
- Single leg Romanian deadlift vs two leg Romanian deadlift
- And so on and so on…

How often in your everyday life do you get to set up perfectly to use both sides of your body at the same time (not counting when you’re at the gym)?

The answer is probably rarely!

Walking, using stairs, pushing/pulling open a door, holding your kid, carrying all the grocery bags in one hand so you can open the door with the other..

If you’re always using bilateral movements in the gym and rarely if ever mixing in unilateral ones, muscular imbalances will grow.
As they grow bigger, the risk of injury also grows. Whether it’s an overuse injury on the stronger side from having to do too much work. Or the weaker side gets hurt because it finally can’t keep up anymore.

If unilateral movements are new to your training, they might feel a little wobbly at first. Stay light and get used to them. Once they feel more comfortable, start to challenge yourself more with the weight.

Your future self will thank you!!🙌🏻🙌🏻

I’m going to tell you which workout program will get you in the best shape of your life!!

There are a lot of options out there… functional fitness, bodybuilding, running, yoga, spin, boxing, powerlifting, and many more.
Personal training, group fitness, or on your own.

So which one is the best?

Well, the answer is…

THE ONE YOU’RE ABLE TO STICK TO!!

I’m a firm believer that CrossFit will get a person in great shape. However, if that person doesn’t like group classes or working out at a higher intensity in a majority of their workouts, they’re probably not going to stick with it for very long. So for that person, CrossFit will NOT get them in good shape. Maybe a bodybuilding program they follow on their own will though!

What works for you might not be the same that works for me but that doesn’t mean that we can’t both get in great shape.

Consistency over a lifetime is the real SECRET INGREDIENT that will lead you to success in reaching your goals!

What is your favorite workout program to follow?

This is Alex. We’ve been working together twice a week, for about 7 weeks now.

He was experiencing shoulder pain in overhead positions on his right shoulder.

His flexibility looked pretty good, so we did some strength testing to see if there were any imbalances.

One of the major imbalances we found was on his single arm high pull, he was able to get 8 reps on his left arm and only 4 reps on his right.
On top of that, he could barely get his elbow shoulder height on his right side. (That’s the second picture on this post).

7 weeks later, after some specific strength work, he went from 4 reps to 11 reps (with the same weight). Plus he was able to get his elbow well above shoulder height (that’s the first picture on this post).

What’s even better than all of that though, is he hasn’t been noticing any shoulder pain lately either!!

It’s always a pleasure getting to work with people that are willing to put in the work and watch them reap the rewards!

Understanding that exercise and nutrition are just a couple pieces to the whole puzzle to living a healthy and happy life is usually pretty eye opening to a lot of people.
👀👀
Everything you do throughout your day has an effect on your body.
Do you sit hunched over at a desk at work all day? 👎🏼
Do you spend a few moments each day to meditate?👍🏼
Do you wake up at the last second so you’re always rushed to get ready and barely make it to work on time?👎🏼
Do you regularly find time to spend with your friends/family that are supportive to your lifestyle and the goals you have?👍🏼

Everything has an effect either 👍🏼 or 👎🏼. Start paying attention. If it seems like the negative ones are outweighing the positive ones, make an intentional change. Really focus on it for a few weeks and you will notice a difference in the way you feel. Physically and mentally!
