Let's talk about regulation. We hear this term thrown around a lot when talking about kids. Regulating kids emotions means helping kids come back to baseline or reducing their big feelings so they can feel more calm.

But what about adults? Do they need regulation too?

YES!

The challenge is that we ask adults to regulate when they have no space, time or energy to do so!

The truth is we need to regulate our emotions at the worst possible time - when we are dysregulated. It can be a hard thing to do but

We can't help our kids regulate if we aren't regulated

We can't help ourselves if we aren't regulated

We can't make decisions from a reasonable place if we aren't regulated

and we certainly cannot parent gently if we aren't regulated

It has been a hard few years. Lately, it seems that everyone that I talk to is feeling worried, concerned, anxious or stressed about the state of the world. There are so many worries about money, safety, relationships, housing, education, and job security and the list goes on and on. These negatives can begin to take over and cause overwhelm and chronic stress.

Even when things are stressful, there is still beauty in the world. I challenge you to take one minute a day to

Maybe it is the sunrise or the sunset. Maybe it is the smile on your child's face when they see you, or a text from a friend. Maybe it is your dog or cat that does something so simple it reminds you that all is ok in that moment.

Whatever it might be, that brings a smile to your face this week, take a moment to soak it in. Place your hand on your heart and feel it beating. Take a deep breath and refresh your body.

Take one moment in the day to remind yourself that the simple things are the beautiful things.

Let's talk about . I have a love/hate relationship with selflessness. I love the idea of it and the kindness that it is associated with, the giving to others, and the notion that we are pouring love on those around us.

It has come to be associated with . It describes how should show up in their lives and with their children. We hear it all the time. She is so selfless. She cares so much for others. We use it as badge of honor.

But selflessness has a dark side too.

Selflessness stops us from showing up for ourselves. It keeps us preoccupied with others needs and wants requiring us to essentially ignore our own. It asks us to abandon our wants, needs, thoughts and feelings.

We don't need moms to be selfless. We need moms to feel safe, supported and nurtured. It is time to change the narrative.

You have permission to be happy.

If you are feeling depleted, exhausted, angry, resentful, or overwhelmed in your life it is time to begin to question why.

Is it because you were conditioned to put the needs of others before yours?

Is it because you haven’t spoken your truth?

Is it because society supports burnout being a form of love?

Is it because you’ve lost yourself in the repetitiveness of everyday life?

What is holding you back from being happy?

Happiness won’t come to you. It’s not just going to show up on your door step like a package. You can’t unpack it, put it on and wear ot around. You have to choose it. In childhood, so many of us were taught to put the needs of other above our own. This shows up in our everyday lives as people pleasing, indecision, and lack of self awareness. Meeting the needs of other first can leave you feeling burned out and resentful.

So how do you know if you have fallen into this trap? Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings when being asked to do for others. Are you feeling angry, overwhelmed, or taken advantage of? Are your thoughts telling you that you deserve better/different or more?

Hopefully, someday, and maybe are all words that we use to comfort ourselves when we feel like we don’t have control over a situation.

Hopefully I will have more time to focus on myself in a year.

Someday when the kids are older I won’t feel so stressed.

Maybe things will change.

All of these are excuses to not have to take action. That is not meant for blame. There are plenty of reasons why people don’t take action. The biggest being they simply don’t know how to so they stay stuck looking to other people or situations to make the change for them.

If nothing changes then nothing changes.

If you are waiting for someone or something to come and make things easier for you you will be disappointed. It simply doesn’t happen. I’ve yet to find that magic person, that just shows up in our lives, and takes away all of the stress, overwhelm, loneliness, anger, resentment or burnout that moms are feeling.

There is good and bad news in this. The bad news is you have to do it yourself. The good news is YOU can do it for yourself. No waiting for someone to rescue you. You have control. No more excuses of someday or hopefully. You already have the ability to change because it comes from within.

After working with many women, in my coaching and therapy practices, I often hear them say “I wish I had made changes sooner”. Don’t wait any longer to be rescued. Rescue yourself! If you need help doing so, reach out!

When my son was first born, I remember feeling so wrapped up in the journey of motherhood.

The diaper changes.
The pumping and feeding schedule.
The nap times.
The late-night feedings.
The tummy time.
The spit-up, baths, and cold coffee.

Life as I knew it was over, and now it was a total blur.

I lost myself in motherhood as quickly as I became a mom.

But, at the same time, my son and I were building this incredible bond.

We were figuring out how to navigate this new journey together.

We were experiencing so many times for the first time... together.

Life wasn't only about me anymore. Every decision I made from the moment I found out I was pregnant was about other little humans. Little humans who I sacrificed for, sometimes lost myself for, but also little humans that helped me find a different part of me too 💕

I sure do love my little humans.

These precious babies that we grew inside of us are now fully dependent on us for survival.

Who wouldn't be consumed, right?!

If you resonate with this, you may be one of my fellow mamas who feels like she's losing herself in motherhood sometimes. Losing who we were before becoming moms is hard. Recognizing it sometimes is harder. Preventing it is the hardest!

These precious babies that we grew inside of us are now fully dependent on us for survival.
