I'd like to have a conversation about waterfowl judges. Not just my experience but all of you who show and those of you who are judges. I've found many situations where waterfowl judges aren't familiar with all waterfowl and don't know the standard for each bird/class. Especially Sebastopol. I find this very frustrating. Does anyone have any helpful insight on the judging criteria, judges experiences, or choosing judges?
This weekend, I was chosen #2 old goose over another old goose who was yellow and had twisted wings. No shade to the owner, but I wanted to talk to the judge about why he put my girl #2 in variety. I didn't have the opportunity to talk to him as the judges left right after results. Very frustrating.
A buyer of one of my birds in a different state said the judge at their fair loved her bird but it didn't have enough chest curl. When she told the judge the bird was only 4 months old and that it would curl more next year he said, ' I disagree but, I don't know much about sebastopol.' WTF???? I really do find this unacceptable. As Sebastopol breeders, what can we do to make sure judges are educated about the breed and every breed they judge. We're all working towards the SOP and I find all our efforts in vain if no one is educated. I expect judges to know more than me no matter what breed they judge. I really am looking for answers, suggestions, and information on how we can improve this situation. Any breeder works tirelessly and no matter the species or breed, knowledge is key.
No hate or judgement. I want to improve the situation.
