A beautiful day to meet with new clients.

🌟The importance of meeting and getting to know your doula🌟
Hiring a doula can be a beneficial addition to your birth team so it’s important to get along with them and make sure your values align.
Some questions to ask your doula at your interview:
1. What is your favorite part of birth work?
2. What is included in your fee?
3. How do you feel you best support people in labor and postpartum?
4. Do you have any experience supporting my type of birth?
5. What if you aren’t available when I’m in labor?
6. How can you support my partner?

POSTPARTUM IS IMPORTANT

Bonding. Recovery. Feeding. The third stage. Delayed cord cutting. Extended skin to skin.

ALL evidence suggest these thing are important and have lasting effects well beyond birth!

There is ZERO evidence to suggest that, after hours in the hospital, a support person suddenly becomes a risk 2 hours after baby is born.

But under Victoria’s new guidelines, Dads, partners, coparents, birth support people and doulas will no be able to stay for more than 2hours post birth.

Think this sucks? PLEASE sign the petition

đź’«The toilet is dilation stationđź’«
🌟 You naturally relax your pelvic floor and perineum while sitting on a toilet
🌟 You are more used to being relaxed in the bathroom
🌟 You can turn the lights down and even straddle the toilet backwards to help make you more comfortable and relaxed (use pillows)
🌟 You are working with gravity
🌟 You are opening your pelvis, which gives baby lots of room to navigate through the birth canal

Our bodies change so much through our life; especially for birthing people it can be hard to love every part of ourselves at times. As a doula I support birthing people through these changes of pregnancy, labor and postpartum and I see first hand how important it is for birthing people to believe in themselves and their bodies. Some simple things we can do to love and trust ourselves a little more are:
1.Practice self care - It can be little things what important is that you listen to your body and its needs
2.Learn about how your body changes during the perinatal period - ask your provider or take a childbirth class. These can be good resources to learn about your body.
3.Build a great birth team- OBGYN, midwife, chose your place of birth, and chose a doula these are people that should be listening to you and your needs they should not be shaming you about weight gain or your diet. (there is a difference between a health care provider giving advice or shaming you)
4.Think about your body in a positive way- remember you are amazing and your body has so much wisdom.
5.Have a plan for your postpartum care- Postpartum can be very hard but it doesn’t have to be. Have a support system in place
before you need it.
Having love and trust for your body is so important for birthing people no matter what stage of life you are in. Even 12 years postpartum we should be looking back at our beautiful bodies with love.

Everyone wants to know “What is the best thing I can do to prepare for birth?”. I give the same answers every time: eat whole foods, exercise when you can and take a childbirth class. A childbirth class can really help a birthing person figure out what type of birth feels best for them. Childbirth classes each teach things slightly different but the main goal of most is to increase your satisfaction and understanding of the childbirth experience. If you attend an in person class you can meet other parents that will be giving birth around the same time as you and you can discus your fears with people in a similar position with an instructor who can help you work through those fears. If your partner attends with you it can help them understand more of what to expect and how to support you during labor and postpartum. If you go with an online class you can go through at your own pace and go back and listen as much as you would like. Weather you use online or in person childbirth classes teach about different options for birth and how those options change your birth experience. If you are interested in a childbirth class drop a comment down bellow.

As a new parent its easy to forget your own needs when you are meeting your new baby’s every need 27/7. It’s so important for for you not to forget that you are also a human who has just gone through a big change and you have needs too. Self care doesn’t have to be hour long bubble baths, with candles. Bubble baths are very relaxing but may not be practical for some new parents. Self care can be as simple as listening to your body like eating when you are hungry, drinking enough water and going to the bathroom when you need to. Asking for help when you need it is self care. It is natural for you to want to figure this out and be a good parent but part of that is asking for help; there are so many people that want to help you. A common tip to new parents is “sleep when the baby sleeps” and I believe in this 100%. You need sleep to rest your body and mind so that you can better take care of yourself and baby; so why not get every ounce of sleep you can especially during that first 6 weeks. Some other simple things you can do to help you feel more relaxed and taken care of:
shower when you normally would
change clothes
Change sheets
Have a friend come over to talk to you
Stretch in the mornings
Listen to some music
Light some candles in the room that you are in

The most important thing is that you fell loved, cared for and supported during the postpartum period. A postpartum doula can be essential to some parents during this time. Just like in birth a Doula is there to help you reach your goals in birth. A postpartum doula helps you reach your goals in postpartum.

One of the most common questions I get asked is “What even is a doula?” and the answer is well a lot of things. In our most basic form and, what most people imagine, is that a doula is a professional trained in childbirth that supports a birthing person emotionally and physically during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. While that is true a doula actually does a lot more. A doula is someone that creates a network within the community of people like chiropractors, lactation consultants, therapists that specialize in perinatal health, and so many more that they can then share with their clients. A doula is someone who listens to your goals and dreams about this life changing event and helps you reach for those goals. A doula also helps parters find their groove in helping you through labor allowing them to rest when they need to and be there for you when you need them. A doula helps facilitates communication between you and your provider. A doula has a back pocket full of labor positions and comfort measures to pull out if you need them. These are just a few of the reasons that doulas are so important to birthing people.

Today is International Home birth day! Home birth is an awsome option for birth. You can home birth with a midwife or have an unassisted birth at home. There are many benefits to birthing home.
You can be comfortable in your own space any never have to move to a birthing place.
If you chose a Certified Nurse Midwife they bring medical equipment for you and baby. And they assess baby after birth as well.
You can labor and birth in any position or place you want.
Weather home birth is right for you or not it’s important to assess all of your options so that you can make the birth plan that you want and so you can talk to your provider about that plan.

There are so many ways to connect with baby during pregnancy. Some of my favorites are singing to your baby, partner talking to baby, and poking your belly to see if they will poke back. From somewhere around 18 to 25 weeks you can start to feel baby rolling, twirling and kicking in your womb; so when you feel those movements give baby a poke and they just might poke back.

When your partner talks to baby it can be a bonding experience for all three of you. Baby gets to hear their parents voice, you get to see your partner as a loving parent and your partner gets to bond with baby. Oxytocin for everyone! Another way to connect with baby is to meditate. There are tons or great guided meditations for connecting with baby; this is something else you can do with your partner.

You can talk to your doula about how you like to connect with baby so that they can remind you of this during labor and birth.

We use affirmations in our life without realizing it almost everyday; before we walk into a job interview we tell ourselves “I’ve got this!”, and while on a run or at the gym we listen to empowering music. Affirmations can be great way to stay focused and positive; so why not take that into pregnancy and birth. We say these phrases to build confidence and remind ourselves of our power. It can be helpful to find affirmations that you relate to before birth and to get used to saying it to yourself . Your doula can remind you of the affirmations that you like while you are in labor. Here are some examples of some different birth affirmations
