If you are planning a natural birth, but you are starting to voice that plan and now you’re getting some pushback (even if it’s well intentioned) which is starting to spark some fear and doubt in you..

This caption is for you.

Birth is 90% mental.

I’m going to share with you a foundational birth principle called the “fear-pain-loop” cycle.

The way you prepare for your birth and educate yourself will make ALL the difference in your birth!

When you’re in labor, there’s multiple hormones that are released perfectly in sync with each other to help the flow of labor. In natural labor, your body releases oxytocin which also releases endorphins (natural pain relievers!) and helps you to feel relaxed, calm etc.

FEAR is a major disrupter in labor. If you start to feel fear/stress, it inhibits oxytocin and then inhibits endorphins, which then makes you feel the pain stronger, which then brings more fear into your labor, and on the cycle goes.

You have to address fear of birth at the root before labor even comes on. The main ways you do this:

1. Learn about physiological birth and how your body was made for this. Ina May Gaskin’s book “Guide to childbirth” is a fantastic start. You will never look at birth the same and you’ll learn dozens of new things that most women are never taught about birth! This will tremendously help grow your confidence to pursue a natural birth, and decrease that fear factor.

2. Listen to positive birth stories. and have some amazing birth stories and footage often; the podcast is also fantastic. Most people have subconscious fears and predisposed associations that birth = pain, mainly from movies/negative birth stories they’ve been told. Listening to more positive natural birth stories will help change perspective.

3. Learn how to prep your body/uterus for natural birth. Squats, walking, stretching, staying active, eating dates in third trimester, getting baby in a good position in the pelvis..all of these things matter!

Find a birth team that is patient, encouraging, and believes in your ability to give birth. Sounds easy but with maternity care becoming so medicalized now in the hospital, it’s not easy to get a birth like this in the modern healthcare system. We would love to support you in having the natural birth you’ve always dreamed and wished for!

🤰🏻BABY’S POSITION IN RELATION TO BETTER, LESS PAINFUL LABORS 👇🏼

Did you know the position your baby is in when you are in labor makes a BIG difference in your labor and birth experience, and can affect the level of pain in contractions?

This video is excellent in showing why back labor happens (if you’ve had it, you know 🥴🫠😖) and how to help prevent it!

The “AP” (anterior) baby position is considered best because the baby’s back faces the front of the mother’s abdomen, which leads to a smaller diameter as it passes through the pelvis, a better molding of the head, and a more effective “wiggling” motion to help it descend.

In contrast, a “posterior” (OP) or “sunny side up” position, where the baby faces the mother’s abdomen, can lead to a longer, more painful labor because the head is angled larger and the baby’s spine is not curled, making it harder to move through the pelvis. This is a big factor in back labor which can be so much more painful and cause much longer labor and pushing phase.

How to encourage baby in the best position

•when lounging on a couch or a chair, always try to sit straight up and forward, not leaning back as much as possible.
• in your third trimester, you can start doing forward inversions for 30 seconds at a time (just YouTube forward inversion stretch third trimester)
• lots of walking and stretching and some deep squats if you can to help lengthen those uterine muscles and keep your pelvic area nice and strong

Tell us below - did you have a sunny side up baby or an AP baby? What was your experience?

One of the biggest things we could tell you about early labor to help your entire labor experience go a bit better…

It’s not bouncing on a birth ball.
It’s not doing curb walking,
It’s not doing the baby mama dance
It’s not counting contractions and timing them and keeping a log

Ignore your contractions until you can’t ignore them anymore. 🤌🏼

REST. Eat. Drink water. Watch a funny movie. Rest. Take a bath, hang out on your porch swing, read a book, bake something.

If it’s truly labor, more contractions are imminent.
The more we stress ourselves out during early labor trying to “do all the right things”, the less oxytocin will flow and stress does not mix well with labor 😣

So truly, if you’re feeling like you’re having some contractions, go on about life and truly make sure you prioritize rest and doing things like you love to do!
Before you know it, your body will be in active labor and things will be speeding up.

What was your early labor experience like?

If you’re scared of tearing during birth, this is something you’ll want to read!

There are multiple factors that can affect tearing in birth.

Forced pushing and the position you are in when baby is born are 2 major factors,
but the good news is there are things you can do to help greatly decrease the chances of tearing. (Nuchal hands are also sometimes a factor in tearing)

The cool thing about water 💦birth, if you have water available to you, is it helps to decrease the likelihood of tearing.

Water naturally helps the body to relax and soften, which helps the perineal and pelvic muscles to relax. They can stretch out easier, making tearing less likely.

While floating in water, you can do more positions easier like hands and knees or lunges, helping to make more room for the baby, and in turn giving them the space they need to come out easier and this also decreases the chances of tearing.

I would love to hear from you all and your experience - did you tear less or at all during a water birth? 👇🏼

We never get tired of seeing amazing birth footage like this 🤗✨

Being in the water can help soothe even the most intense parts of labor.

A lot of people say warm water in labor is “nature’s epidural”! 🌿✨

It soothes, relaxes, helps take pressure off of joints and pelvic region, and helps to boost oxytocin flow!

If you had a water birth or labored in water for relief, would you share your experience below? Would you do it again?

🥰 Wow! We absolutely love to see birth vlog videos like this. What a beautiful labor and birth.

What are some key things that you can keep in mind if you’re preparing for a natural birth like this mama did?

•Have a strong support partner and system! Hiring a doula can also be an amazing asset to have.

•Having a laboring birth pool nearby. This does wonders for helping your body to relax, producing more oxytocin which is a major key 🔑 player in helping birth to be smoother, more efficient and much less painful.

•Aromatheraphy 🌿 is an incredible thing to have while you’re laboring. This mama loved orange, which has relaxing properties, as well as vanilla and lavender essential oils in a diffuser are great choices as well in your labor space.

•LOW LIGHTS. 💡 This mama has her room darker with some warm lighting here and there, and her favorite relaxing worship music playing. Your environment plays a big role in your natural birth. A darker more relaxed room will help more oxytocin flow, more endorphins to release, and more feelings of safety in your body and mind - key things for a more positive birth.
