We’re officially on the road! Our first stop on the 2026 Smile Tour takes us to Healing Hands Health in Bristol, where compassionate care and community impact come together every day.

Healing Hands has been a trusted resource since 1997, serving around 17,000 patients across Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Today, they’re continuing to evolve, transitioning from a historically emergency-based dental clinic to one focused on preventive, restorative and comprehensive care.

With support from The Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation, this grant will help fund the salary of the clinic’s Dental Director, expanding access to care for Virginia Medicaid and uninsured adult patients. It’s an investment that strengthens not just staffing, but the clinic’s ability to grow and serve more people who need it most.

This is what the Smile Tour is all about. Supporting the people behind the care and sharing the real impact happening in communities across Virginia.

Poor oral health doesn't just affect your smile. It can impact the way you feel, too.

Gum disease, tooth loss, and chronic bad breath are linked to stress, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

The good news? Regular check-ups and simple daily habits can protect both.

Poor oral hygiene has been linked to serious conditions like heart disease and stroke, but the impact doesn't stop there.

Emerging research is revealing a powerful connection between oral health and mental health that most people never consider. Read more at the link in the comments.

To wrap up National Volunteer Month, we want to recognize our team member, Katie Begley, and all of the work she has done in the community.

For Katie, volunteering is an act of service rooted in empathy and shared experience. “It’s about helping make someone else’s path a little easier, especially when it’s a road I’ve walked myself,” she shared. That mindset has guided her involvement across a wide range of organizations, from serving on the advisory board at Peninsula Catholic High School to volunteering with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, where she’s made sandwiches for a soup kitchen alongside her kids. Through her husband’s military service, she’s also supported families through Family Readiness Groups, the USO, and as an ombudsman.

Her experiences have shaped how she sees the world, strengthening her sense of connection and purpose. Katie believes volunteering not only meets real needs, but also reminds us of the role we all play in supporting one another. We’re grateful for the care and commitment Katie brings to her community, and proud to have her as part of our team.

We’re excited to introduce the Smile Tour, a new series where we’re highlighting the Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation’s 2025 grant recipients as they serve throughout 2026. Join our mascot, Flossy, as he jumps in the driver’s seat and travels across Virginia.

Each pit stop is a chance to learn more about the clinics and see the impact behind their work - the patients being served, the teams making it happen, and the communities gaining access to care.

These grants are helping clinics expand operatories, invest in critical equipment, and bring on dentists, hygienists, and support staff. All of these efforts help to address the dental care gaps facing communities across Virginia.

This tour is about showing what that impact looks like up close and sharing the stories behind it. We’ll be highlighting a new Smile Tour stop each week, so follow along as we go.

Here’s a look ahead of our grantees that will be featured on the tour:
Healing Hands Health
Bradley Free Clinic
CHIP of Roanoke Valley
New Horizons Healthcare
Rockbridge Area Health Center
Augusta Regional Dental Clinic, Inc.
Charlottesville Free Clinic
Community Dental Center
CrossOver Healthcare Ministry
Neighborhood Health
Northern Neck - Middlesex Free Health Clinic

Spring has finally arrived… and so has the pollen.

For many people, that means allergy symptoms are kicking in, and surprisingly, those symptoms can even cause toothaches.

Curious how allergies lead to tooth pain, or when it’s time to call your dentist? Check out the full breakdown at the link in the comments!

We’re continuing to recognize the many ways our team members show up for their communities by highlighting Mirna Hosny for National Volunteer Month .

For Mirna, volunteering is rooted in connection and creating lasting impact. She’s supported a range of organizations over the years - Harmony Animal Sanctuary (Angels of Assisi), 3rd Street Coffee House, and Latinas Network, where she also serves as a board member. Through each experience, she’s found opportunities to step outside her comfort zone, meet new people and grow along the way.

One moment that stands out most to her was helping organize a fundraiser at 3rd Street Coffee House to support Feeding Southwest Virginia. “We surpassed our fundraising goal that day, and it felt especially meaningful to see what’s possible when people come together to support their community,” she shared.

Whether it’s large events or ongoing efforts like supporting Spanish Story Time at the Williamson Road Public Library, Mirna continues to make a meaningful impact, and we’re proud to have her on our team.

From the classroom to the clinic, Dr. Billy Owen’s journey shows what’s possible when we invest in future providers.

A graduate of VCU School of Dentistry and a Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation Endowed Scholarship recipient, Dr. Owen is now serving patients at the Northern Neck - Middlesex Free Health Clinic where access to dental care has continued to grow in recent years.

Through the Foundation’s support, including grant funding to expand the clinic’s dental program and loan repayment to help offset the cost of his education, Dr. Owen was able to step into a full‑time role caring for patients in Virginia’s safety net.

Today, he’s not only providing care; he’s also helping guide the next generation of dental students as they rotate through the clinic. Stories like Dr. Owen’s remind us that when we invest in education, access, and workforce development, the impact continues to grow long after graduation.

The Earth gives us plenty of reasons to smile, and this Earth Day we’re sharing a few through the lens of our Proposals Team Lead, Glen Mitchell. A longtime wildlife photographer, Glen has spent years capturing moments in wildlife that remind us how beautiful our planet is and, in some cases, it even looks like the animals are smiling right back.

“I love it when I can capture an image of an animal going about its daily life, especially if it didn’t know or even care that I was there. It’s not easy to capture. It takes patience, timing, and a bit of luck, but the result is a perspective that makes you pause and appreciate the world around you."

For Glen, Earth Day is a chance for people to reconnect with the natural world, whether that’s through hands-on efforts like planting trees and cleaning up communities or simply learning more about the environment around them.

At Delta Dental of Virginia, we think about smiles every day, and today is a reminder that some of the best ones come from the world we all share. Thanks to Glen for helping us see it that way.

We’re proud to celebrate the heart of our team members and their commitment to giving back to the communities we serve. Today, we’re highlighting Keri Clinevell, whose passion for service makes a meaningful difference.

Keri is deeply dedicated to helping others and has volunteered with local food banks, participated in community cleanups, built beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace and spent time connecting with veterans in her community. One experience especially close to her heart is volunteering at Bingo with Veterans, where she values the opportunity to build relationships with those who served our country.

“Knowing I can bring a bit of joy and connection to their day makes it a truly special experience.”

Thank you, Keri, for your dedication and for the positive impact you make in the community every day.
