Shampoo and conditioner isn’t as necessary as I used to think it was. For the past few months I’ve pretty much been rinsing my hair with water. Since May, I’ve twice done a baking soda rinse at my scalp, but otherwise just water. I used to use mountains of conditioner and now I don’t need any. My hair isn’t quite as sleek, but it’s pretty good and less wasteful for sure. I used to have to rinse it with water every couple of days, not it’s once or twice a week.

I used to really worry about the amount of d cholesterol I ate, especially since dietary cholesterol was demonized for years. Now it seems more likely that avoiding dietary cholesterol causes your body to produce more cholesterol, while eating higher levels of cholesterol does not raise an individual’s cholesterol. I now know cholesterol is vital for health, especially production of healthy hormone levels, and is necessary for every cell in your body. I definitely include eggs on my list of superfoods.

It’s easy to think we know a lot about health, especially compared to prior generations, but we really know almost nothing. We’re decently good at treating acute injuries and have made great progress in treating infections, but we’ve completely gone the other direction with chronic diseases. We fix one thing, but that leads to so many unintended consequences. I’m constantly thinking about how everything is just a hypothesis and what we “know” now will probably change in the future. Whenever you hear an idea that you think is crazy, just keep in mind that Galileo was declared a heretic for believing the earth went around the sun. What current practice/belief do you think future people will look back and laugh about how wrong we were? 💫

Revelation 2: the Sun doesn’t and shouldn’t be avoided ALL the time. In fact, you should get some Sun between the hours of 10am-2pm, those exact hours that dermatologists and the media tell us to avoid. I’m not saying spend the entire time outside in the blazing Sun. You certainly don’t want to get burnt. However, Sun is the best source of vitamin D which is vital to so many of the body’s processes and the skin will only produce vitamin D when the Sun is at certain angles in the sky, i.e. the middle of the day. Interestingly, you’re less likely to burn if you don’t wear sunglasses and your eye health will actually improve if you ditch sunglasses. No other animals on the planet avoid the Sun like it’s the plague or slather themselves in toxic chemicals to “protect” themselves from the Sun. I drank the sunscreen kool-aid for a long time and now I only wear mineral sunscreen if I’m going to be out in open sun for hours and don’t have a tan. The Sun literally is vital for life on this planet and we should start embracing it a little more. Plus if you look at the stats on skin cancer deaths and macular degeneration, they go up in tandem with the use of sunscreen and sunglasses.

In the past 2-3 years, I feel like I’ve learned that almost everything I thought I knew for my whole life has been wrong. The major thing I’ve learned is the media/mega corporations/big business indoctrinate people with the belief that human beings are fragile. Reality check: human beings become fragile by listening and following most of mainstream media advice. If you live the way humans beings are supposed to live, you’ll be anti-fragile. I’m going to do some post about some of the things I’ve learned. Warning you might think I’m super gross or dislike me by the end of these revelations. First up: fluoridated toothpaste, and toothpaste generally, is 100% unnecessary for oral health and the prevention of cavities. The real key to preventing cavities is proper nutrition, especially getting adequate amounts of vitamins A, E, K, and D. Additionally, fluoride actually kills healthy bacteria in the mouth that produces nitric oxide which has numerous health benefits. I ditched fluoridated toothpaste while ago, now if only I could get out out of my water. Btw, I’ve never had a cavity.

Push press and push jerk work. My biggest fitness focus currently is to add muscle to my frame, my second focus is improve my Olympic Lifting, and my 3rd focus is improve mobility. I find it interesting that my push press feels a lot more stable than my push jerk. What fitness goals are you working on?

A great source of protein should be the foundation of every meal you eat. Protein is generally believed to be the most satiating macronutrient, making it more difficult to go crazy over eating it. Plus protein makes it possible for the body to maintain and build muscle. Lots of muscle is the key LIVING WELL into your old age, i.e. increasing your health span and not just your life span. Once you have a great source of protein as the center of your meal, complete it with nutrient dense, minimally processed sides. Follow this simple advice and you won’t believe how easily your health and life improves.

Heavy deadlifts were programmed today. My pre-pandemic goal was to deadlift 300lbs. My max at the time was 290lbs. Since gyms have reopened my top weight was 285lbs. I lifted 300lbs today!

But that felt pretty good so I threw on 305 and got it!!! 15lbs PR 🎉🎉🎉

I have been doing for the last month and think that definitely helped my core

I also think my nutrition had been good lately and that probably helped too. Keep working towards your goals and you can do it!

Eating healthy does not mean starving or bland food. This was my breakfast today, scrambled eggs topped with sirracha kimchi and yogurt topped with berries and pecans.

What’s great about this meal? Is protein centered, has lots of micronutrients, and takes little time to prepare. Focus on nutrients, not calories ☺️

What’s your favorite healthy meal to make?

I saw this a couple weeks ago and thought it was great.

Do you pay attention to your mood? Do you track it to see if you have any patterns? Have you done any work to change your thought patterns or long term overall mood?

I do think that mental health does require reflection. But, I also find it really interesting how much diet, exercise, and sleep can affect mood.

I was really talking to a friend at climbing and he was talking about he ate the night before. I responded that it sounds like he had a great diet. He said “my diets great, that’s why I’m always so happy!”

The human body is amazing, and I think focusing on mental health helps you make decisions that also benefit your body and vice versa.

What healthy decisions did you make today?
