If you feel stuck / unable to reach your potential despite your hard work, or if you feel triggered / activated and don’t know why, ask yourself “how old do I feel right now?” By identifying how old we FEEL in a moment, we can build valuable insight into our inner systems.
Parts work holds a basic understanding that we all develop internalized parts of ourselves when we are children, which remain within us as we grow to become adults. Parts may represent younger versions of self—sometimes referred to as our “inner child.” Unresolved traumatic events from childhood can be held in a young part of ourselves until we have an opportunity to attend to these memories.
Once you identify how old you feel, you’ll be able to attend to what that younger part of you needs. You may ask that part:
“What are you trying to tell me?”
“What do you need in this moment?”
“Who or what can help you?”
One powerful practice is to imagine the adult part of you (or another nurturing figure in your life) compassionately and lovingly holding this young part of yourself.
There are many therapeutic approaches to working with parts: Ego State Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Internal Family Systems therapy.

It’s Pride Month! The Pride Flag 🏳️🌈 serves as a symbol of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s a visual reminder of the struggles and oppression that people in the community face; it’s also a sign of hope.
The original LGBTQIA+ pride flag was a simple red-to-violet rainbow 🌈, but a new Progress Pride Flag has also been flying high these last few years.
The Progress Pride Flag was created with inspiration from other pride flags - specifically, incorporating the black and brown stripes from the 2017 Philadelphia Pride Flag and the pink, baby blue and white colors of the Trans Flag.
The new additions represent people of color, as well as people who are transgender, intersex, or non-binary. The flag’s triangle shape, which includes these newly added colors, is stacked intentionally next to the original six-color rainbow to highlight the importance of the added changes.
The latest version also incorporates a purple circle over a yellow triangle, which has been added as a nod to Australian Morgan Carpenter’s famous 2013 intersex flag.
This ever-evolving symbol is not meant to replace the original flags, but instead to recognize the progress and value of all parts of the LGBTQIA’+ community.

The autonomic nervous system responds moment to moment to what are often competing needs to survive and to be social. When trauma happens, it creates an autonomic demand that shifts the nervous system away from connection and toward protection. In a state of protection, survival is the only goal. The system is closed to connection and change. In a state of connection, health, growth, and restoration are possible.
When we work on co-regulation of our nervous systems, we can restore sense of safety and stability in the body and mind.

If you’re in an extreme state of anxiety or panic, or you’re experiencing any other distressing feelings that are outside your window of tolerance, dunk your face in ice water for 30 seconds.
All mammals have what’s called the “mammalian diving reflex” that forces the parasympathetic nervous system to kick in and “reset” to help us calm down.
This reflex is activated by icy cold water (not freezing) on the face. In particular, the dive reflex is activated when cold hits the parts of our face just below the eyes and above the cheekbones. When in a heightened state of emotional arousal:
* Fill a bowl with icy cold water
* Bend/lean over
* Hold your breath
* Put your face in the icy water for 15-30 seconds
* Make sure the area underneath your eyes/above cheekbones (most sensitive part of the face) feels the icy water
If you can’t get to icy cold water, you can also use a cold gel mask, ice pack or frozen veggies and place them over/around the eye area to activate the dive reflex.
Warning ⚠️
* Activating the dive reflex slows the heart rate, so anyone with heart problems or a slow heartbeat should avoid this strategy
* Those with eating disorders (particularly anorexia nervosa) should avoid activating the dive reflex, as this is dangerous for the heart
Evolutionary processes have existed for thousands of years to provide a means of regulating our emotions, since effective emotion regulation is vital to our survival. Our bodies are smart and created for resilience and survival.
