Music activates areas of the brain associated with pleasure, reward, and emotional regulation. It can also stimulate the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in regulating mood and emotion.

To listen to music mindfully, listen with your whole body, not just your ears. Let the music move you, physically and/or emotionally. Feel the beat, and bring your full attention to the music and movement.

Tune into what’s happening in different parts of you. What comes to mind? What are the sensations in your body? What emotions do you notice?

Attention Hudson Valley! Did you know we have in-person therapy available in Kingston, NY? With the help of our friends at .holistic.healing , Hannah Grajko, LMSW is now seeing clients in person in addition to virtually throughout NY state.

Hannah specializes in working with PTSD and trauma. Among other modalities, she integrates Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Experiencing (SE), Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), Schema Therapy, DBT, Mindfulness-Based Therapies, and Nature-Based Therapy into her work with clients.

She approaches her clinical work from a deep conviction that all people have the ability to elicit lasting change, find internal calm, and make more skillful decisions if given the right tools. Hannah believes that each of us has the ability to shift our perceived setbacks and struggles into opportunities for growth and learning. She sees her role with clients as a non-judgmental witness, curious co-collaborator, and vessel for authenticity.

Hannah has worked with our Sustainable Wellness team since July 2022, both in Rochester, NY and now in Kingston. She has worn multiple hats at the practice, including providing individual and group therapy, growing our intake specialist role, conducting new client intake evaluations, and conducting screenings for our therapy groups. We are so excited that she is now helping us extend our practice’s roots through the Hudson Valley.

Hannah is currently self pay only, though she is in the process of paneling with Aetna and BCBS.🎉

We will be conducting renovations in the back half of our Village Gate space beginning Monday, January 8, 2024. These changes will allow for the expansion of our yoga space along with more therapy and wellness offices.

While we’ll do our best to minimize disruptions, it’s likely that some of our sessions and other services will be impacted, including temporarily needing to meet in different therapy offices or virtually via our secure Telehealth platform.

We also appreciate your patience as we work around office furniture and construction materials.

Check our Instagram and pages for updates about our progress! We can’t wait to show you what we have in store. 🤩

It’s New Year’s Eve! As we wind down 2023, it can be helpful to reflect on elements of the past year. Grab a pen and paper (or the notepad on your phone) and take a few minutes with these reflection questions.

☼ In what ways did I grow emotionally?
☼ What did the hard things teach me?
☼ What has nudged me closer to my values?
☼ What unexpected joy(s) occurred?
☼ What made me feel most alive?
☼ What relationships do I value the most?
☼ What do I need to let go of, even if it’s hard?
☼ How can I be kinder to myself?

08/03/2023

Did you know that several of our clinicians are trained in Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)? KAP is a holistic modality in which ketamine is prescribed in conjunction with psychotherapy. In partnership with , our team has found the use of ketamine to be incredibly supportive to our clients’ healing journeys.

Ketamine is a safe, legal medication prescribed off-label to treat a variety of mental health diagnoses, including depression, anxiety and PTSD. It has rapidly acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take effect within hours after treatment, and lasting for several weeks after. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA receptors and by stimulating AMPA receptors, which may help form new synaptic connections and boost mood-regulating neural circuits. Ketamine has also been shown to enhance neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement.

07/12/2023

EMDR therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. It’s a structured therapy model that encourages the client to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tactile or audio). Bilateral stimulation, or BLS, is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories.

Ongoing research shows EMDR therapy to be a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences.

It’s *very* important to do EMDR therapy with an EMDRIA-approved therapist, so they can guide you safety and effectively through the 8-phase treatment model. All phases of the model are important, and not everyone will be immediately ready for trauma processing when starting EMDR therapy.

All of our trauma therapists at Sustainable Wellness are trained in EMDR therapy, or scheduled to be fully trained in the coming months. Visit our website, or contact us for more information about EMDR therapy.

06/27/2023

Did you know that journaling is scientifically proven to inspire clarity and feelings of well-being?

There are many forms of writing and various ways to journal. Autobiographical reflection through writing, for example, creates an integrated state between the brain’s left hemisphere, which helps us make sense of things, and the right side of the brain, which stores neural representations of experiences encoded through memories. (For those who do EMDR with us, think of how bilateral stimulation helps us process material!)

Dr. Dan Siegel observes that when integration is achieved, people become:

• flexible
• adaptive
• resilient over time
• stable
• energized

When people process and find meaning through writing, the brain becomes integrated and the individual is able to move through life with greater calm, clarity, and improved overall well-being.

If you feel stuck / unable to reach your potential despite your hard work, or if you feel triggered / activated and don’t know why, ask yourself “how old do I feel right now?” By identifying how old we FEEL in a moment, we can build valuable insight into our inner systems.

Parts work holds a basic understanding that we all develop internalized parts of ourselves when we are children, which remain within us as we grow to become adults. Parts may represent younger versions of self—sometimes referred to as our “inner child.” Unresolved traumatic events from childhood can be held in a young part of ourselves until we have an opportunity to attend to these memories.

Once you identify how old you feel, you’ll be able to attend to what that younger part of you needs. You may ask that part:

“What are you trying to tell me?”
“What do you need in this moment?”
“Who or what can help you?”

One powerful practice is to imagine the adult part of you (or another nurturing figure in your life) compassionately and lovingly holding this young part of yourself.

There are many ther**eutic approaches to working with parts: Ego State Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Internal Family Systems therapy.

Most of our therapists are experienced in working with parts work as part of the therapy process. Visit our website to learn more at sustainablewellnessny.com.
