Happy #SummerSolstice2022, Rochester! Here are a few ENT tips for making this summer a healthy one:
๐ฆ Stay hydrated! You body needs more water than usual in hot environments. Drink water consistently throughout the day to avoid dehydration and exhaustion.
๐ Wear earplugs to outdoor concerts and music festivals to prevent noise-induced hearing loss.
๐โโ๏ธ Avoid swimmer's ear by keeping your ears as dry as possible, and thoroughly drying your ears after swimming and showering. Avoid lakes/rivers if high bacteria counts are posted.
๐ Wear your sunscreen! SPF protects you from harmful UV rays and reduces the risk of skin cancers.
๐คง Got summer allergies? Over-the-counter medications, prescriptions from an allergy specialist, and nasal sprays and rinses are all common remedies. Be sure to wash your hands and face regularly, shower and change clothes at the end of the day, wash your bedding often, and check pollen count reports.
๐น Be careful with alcohol and sugary drinks. Alcohol can dehydrate you!

Many head & neck cancer survivors will tell you that community is a key part of getting through this difficult experience. Henry King, aka Lary Talk, who was treated at Wilmot Cancer Institute for laryngeal cancer, certainly knows this to be true.
Henry is a podcaster and cook who once wished to see more firsthand perspectives of life as a "Lary" โ short for people who've gone through a laryngectomy procedure โ when he was searching the Internet after his cancer diagnosis and staying home during COVID lockdowns. Feeling fortunate to be able to speak after his surgery and treatment, Henry now uses his voice for an important cause: sharing helpful, positive information and raising awareness about the #LaryLife on a podcast called "Lary Talk." UR Medicine ENT surgeon Dr. Joel Fontanarosa has even appeared as one of Henry's guests.
We're thankful that Henry is sharing a part of his story with us, just in time for Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month. Put on some headphones ๐ง and listen to Henry's message in his own words.
