Foods that Lower Blood Pressure
🍎
* Fruits: apple, banana, blueberry, cranberry, fig, grape, orange, pomegranate.

* Vegetables: beets, broccoli, celery, dandelion greens, garlic, mushrooms, parsley, potatoes, seaweed, spinach

* Drinking eight ounces (a cup) of beetroot juice (best cooked, but raw will do) a day, every day, decreases blood pressure about as quickly and about as much as most drugs. It is loaded with nitrate, which turns into nitric oxide in the body, widens blood vessels and increases blood flow.

🍄☕️Mushrooms are all the rage these days! When in truth, they have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years, for their numerous benefits. Cordyceps is an adaptogenic fungus that, despite what The Last of Us would have us believe, is quite beneficial. It reduces fatigue, and has anti-aging properties, and fights inflammation. The adaptogenic properties help the body deal with stress and anxiety, which are also found in schisandra.

☕️For those looking to make the shift away from coffee or caffeine, like I have, but still want that energy boost in the morning, I highly recommend Teeccino’s Mushroom Herbal Tea Sampler. The flavors are delicious, and I’m looking forward to trying each one before choosing my favorite. I love folk medicine stories like this!

I love folk medicine stories like this!

North Carolina folk healer, Emma Dupree (1898-1996).
The following is from Harriet's Apothecary (follow them on Instagram for more inspirational stories on Black healers and wellness leaders):
“Born in 1897, the traditionally lucky seventh child (among 18 siblings), Dupree grew up on the Tar River and was known in her family as "that little medicine thing" because of her early understanding of herbs. "All that we see, everything that is growin' in the earth is healin' to the nation of any kind of disease," Miss Dupree would always say.
From the time she could walk, Dupree felt drawn to the land. She would roam the woods, plucking, sniffing, tasting weeds. She grew up that way, collecting the leaves, stems, roots and bark of sweet gum, white mint, mullein, sassafras in her coattail or a tin bucket. She'd tote them back to the farm, rinse them in well water and tie them in bunches to dry.
In the backyard, she'd raise a fire under a kettle and boil her herbs to a bubbly froth, then pour it up in brown-necked stone jugs: A white-mint potion for poor circulation; catnip tea for babies with colic; tansy tea - hot or cold - for low blood sugar; mullein tea for a stomach ache. Mixed with molasses or peppermint candy to knock out the bitterness.
Her kind of folk medicine dates back centuries. As an elderly woman she shared much of her knowledge with doctors and medical anthropologists, who came to her so they could understand more about the medicinal properties of native plants."

Let's talk about pawpaw. No, not your father. We’re talking about the pawpaw tree.

What makes pawpaw special is its fruit—the largest edible native fruit in the country, pawpaw fruit is sweet and resembles a green, squash-like potato. They are said to taste similar to custard or mango, with hints of vanilla. It’s not all sweet, however. Its flowers are said to give off an unpleasant smell when in bloom.

Pawpaw is a native tree found along the western edge of NY and in the southern US. A small tree, it best grows on lowland river-bottom soil, in shrubby thickets. Pawpaw fruits grow to 5-6 inches long, peaking in September to October.

Sage:
Ever wonder why we put sage in stuffing?
Today we understand that sage is an antibacterial herb. Our ancestors also knew that to insure food safety, it was best to add an abundance of sage to the stuffing or 'belly pudding', and rub the bird inside and out with salt before filling the cavity (where we know today bacteria is most likely to form). Scientific studies can now help us understand why many of our 'classic flavor combinations', demonstrate that our ancestors knew a great deal about preserving food, food quality and health - leading to the old adage that 'The cook is half a physician'.
Sage is also synonymous with wisdom. In fact, it might be said that many an 'old sage' gained her wisdom from the use of sage. "As far back as 1597, herbalist John Gerard wrote that sage was 'singularly good for the head and brain and quickeneth the nerves and memory.' Half a century later, Nicholas Culpeper, claimed the herb 'heals the memory, warming and quickening the senses".
The Latin name for Sage is Salvia which translates to "Life"...so add some life to your holiday foods this season with Salvia officinalis or our common perennial garden sage!

More “old tymey” medicine from my collection. This one circa 1900, Swamp Root, given “to flush the kidneys and bladder, thereby aiding in their work of eliminating waste matter.
10.5% alcohol in a syrup base, Active ingredients:
Buchu leaves
Peppermint herb
Rhubarb root
Mandrake root
Cape aloes
Scullcap leaves
Colombo root
Golden seal root
Valerian root
Sassafras
Cinnamon
Oil of Juniper
Oil of Birch
Balsam copaiba
Balsam tolu
🌱
Over all, one of non-toxic traditional medicines of the day. Many good herbs for kidneys, an overall tonic. I’d imagine the sassafras, cinnamon, and balsams are more to disguise the stinky feet smell of the relaxing valerian root. Given that amounts weren’t included on the label, this was at best a mild tonic/diuretic/laxative, and at worst a bit of sweetened alcohol that did nothing more than raise your blood sugar.

Cilantro is a powerful mobilizer of heavy metals! I personally love the taste, how about you?

Famed chef Julia Child hated cilantro with an unbridled passion. She banned it from her home, her kitchen, and all of her sous chefs from using the herb. And now we have a scientific explanation as to why. 10% of the population has an olfactory gene that makes cilantro tastes like soap. Explains so much.

My first attempt at Nomato sauce was a huge success! I followed this recipe: https://www.food.com/recipe/basic-nomato-sauce-tomato-free-tomato-sauce-359835

With a few adjustments:
Added an extra beet for color, loads of garlic powder since I didn’t have any fresh, loads of dried Italian seasoning blend (oregano, marjoram, basil, thyme, rosemary, sage), sea salt, and a drizzle of EVOO.

It made almost exactly 1 quart size jar. Tastes amazing and I can’t wait to make my gluten-free, dairy-free pizza tonight!

01/02/2021

Since life has been such an adjustment for all of us, and because we are still in the midst of a pandemic, it may be more prudent to relax on the new years resolutions for the time being. Or at the very least, focus on small, short-term goals, that can be adjusted as needed. It is perfectly fine to have long term goals kept in the back of our minds, but the key is to be flexible in this season, adaptable, and able to flex if we find ourselves in quickly changing situations again. Setting rigid resolutions in a season of uncertainty will most likely result in failure leading to feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and possible depression. Focusing on survival, flexibility, adaptability, and keeping our focus short-term will better preserve our emotional state and keep us in good mental health.
