Let’s talk about one of breastfeeding’s lesser-known players: the Feedback Inhibitor of Lactation (aka FIL, your milk supply’s sneaky little regulator).
💛 Here’s the scoop: FIL is a hormone hanging out in your breast milk that essentially says, ‘We’ve got plenty of milk here—no need to make more right now.’ So, the more milk that sits in your breasts, the more FIL is released, and the louder the ‘stop making milk’ signal gets sent to your brain.
💛 But here’s the trick: frequent milk removal (aka nursing or pumping) keeps FIL in check! The more you nurse, the less FIL is around to send that ‘slow down’ message. Instead, your body receives the ‘We’re low on stock- send more milk!’ message, and responds by making more!
So if you’re working to boost that supply, remember: empty breasts make more milk, full breasts… not so much. Keep that milk flowing!
