Flashback Friday: Yoga and Art series!

Today we are flashing back to the 6 weeks yoga and art series I am doing with the Chili Recreation Center! We are building each week on our yoga poses, yoga obstacle courses, yoga block challenges, mindfulness skills, and more!

This class is play based and helps kids to learn skills that are transferable to all areas of life! We work on cooperation, mindfulness, deep breathing, teamwork, gross motor skills and more.

Therapist Thursday: Mindfulness

Mindfulness means to be present in the moment you are in; and while kids may not realize it, but when we walk around with a block on our head or crawl around with a block on our back, we are practicing mindfulness. The act of balancing a block requires kids to be present in the moment, to focus on their movement, and to move in a calm and controlled manner.

Practicing this way of mindfulness really helps kids to stay present. Once we know what it feels like to stay present, you can take that same skill and apply it to other areas of your life!

Deep breathing Tuesday (pt. 5)

Joy Breathing šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

This is a great breathing technique that combines movement and deep breath to regulate your nervous system!

You take 3 short breaths in while raising your arms up to the sky. Then let your breath out while bringing your arms and the top of your body towards the ground.

Flashback Friday: Shamrock Shake and Rainbow Calm Event

On February 28, I collaborated with and for an event called Shamrock Shake and Rainbow Calm.

We did some deep breathing, we moved our bodies with stuffies, and we did a craft or coloring to calm!

It was so much fun to get us ready for March and St. Patrick’s Day!

Therapist Thursday part 2: Mindfulness

Mindfulness and deep breathing techniques go hand-in-hand. When we take deep breaths, we are not going calming our minds but we are bringing ourself to the present moment. Which is what mindfulness is!

I use a play-based approach for deep breathing techniques and mindfulness so that kids not only learn it, but are more likely to implement on their own when they need it.

Because research shows that kids only need 10-20 repetitions in order to learn something new if it is taught your play!

Deep Breathing Tip Tuesday: Flower Breathing

Today’s deep breathing tip is perfect for these upcoming spring days.

For flower breathing, you bring your hands to your chest and open up your three middle fingers. Keeping your pinkies and thumbs touching. Take a deep breath in and then let it out to blow the petals away.
