šŸŒšŸ’œ International Overdose Awareness Day

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost to overdose, support the families and friends who grieve, and stand with all those still struggling. Overdose does not discriminate—it touches every community, every family, and every generation.

At Second Chance Care, we believe that recovery is possible, that every life has value, and that awareness saves lives. By talking openly about substance use and overdose, we break down stigma and create space for healing, compassion, and hope.

Together, let’s honor those we’ve lost, uplift those in recovery, and commit to a future where no life is cut short by overdose. šŸ’œ

ā€œAnything I Put in Front of My Recovery, I Will Loseā€

This truth hits hard—but it’s one I’ve learned the hard way.

In recovery, I’ve come to understand that my sobriety isn’t just something I try to maintain. It’s the foundation of everything I want to build in life. Without it, the rest crumbles. My relationships, my job, my health, my peace of mind—none of it can survive if I put it ahead of my recovery.

There were times I thought I could juggle it all. That I could prioritize work, people-please my way through relationships, or chase success without checking in on my mental, emotional, and spiritual health. But every time I made something more important than my recovery, I lost it all. Because when I’m not well, I can’t show up for anything else.

Now I know: my recovery has to come first—not in theory, but in practice. That means saying no when I need to, making time for meetings, therapy, prayer, or self-care, and staying honest—even when it’s uncomfortable.

Recovery isn’t a punishment. It’s a gift. It gives me back everything addiction tried to steal—and more. But only if I honor it every day.

So today, I remind myself: If I put anything in front of my recovery, I will lose it. But if I put recovery first, I give myself the chance to keep everything else I truly love.

Last Friday, Director of Admissions and Outreach, Nick Borowski, attended an incredible dinner at Robert’s Restaurant inside the Omni Shoreham Hotel hosted by The Meadows Treatment Center, which perfectly capped off the wonderful Psychotherapy Networker Symposium.

The highlight of the evening was sharing a meal with Claudia Black, a distinguished therapist and prolific author known for her groundbreaking work on addiction, mental health, codependency, and the experiences of children raised by alcoholic parents.

Thank you to James F. and to The Meadows for hosting such a memorable event.
