📣 We are very excited to introduce our newest therapist at Hikma Counseling, Aisha Raja, M.A. Aisha is now accepting adults and adolescent clients for online therapy. Read more about Aisha below:

“I work with those navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, identity development, family and relationship challenges, trauma, grief, and self-esteem.

Many clients seek me out due to our shared identity. As a Pakistani-American Muslim woman from an immigrant family, I’m passionate about working with diverse and underserved communities, understanding the unique challenges they face.

I take a holistic and integrative approach, considering the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. I tailor therapy to each client’s unique needs using evidence-based modalities including cognitive-behavioral therapies and mindfulness-based stress reduction.

My goal is to empower you through empathy and collaboration, providing a safe, nonjudgmental space to explore emotions, promote healing, and support personal growth and self-awareness. A strong therapeutic relationship will guide our work together.

The first step toward therapy can feel overwhelming, even scary. It can be tough to share your experiences, but you don’t have to go through it alone. I welcome individuals from all backgrounds and strive to create a safe, supportive space for self-exploration, where you feel heard and free from judgment. I look forward to supporting your journey.”

We are very excited to introduce our newest psychologist at Hikma Counseling, Hamza Quadri, PsyD. Dr. Hamza is now accepting new clients and has daytime and evening availability. Read more about Dr. Hamza below:

I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who received his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School in 2021. I have experience working with adults, couples, and families in a variety of settings including private practice, college counseling, and outpatient hospital settings across the Chicagoland area and the state of New York.

Working from within a spiritually and culturally sensitive approach, I emphasize a psychodynamic and interpersonal approach in my clinical work. This may practically look like focusing on the relationship between patient and therapist to explore unconscious beliefs affecting personality, relationships, and symptoms.

Diagnoses are only an initial window into someone’s suffering. It takes a concerted effort on both the part of the patient and provider to better unveil the secrets of one’s life and the center of one’s pain. Understanding the personality and the ways life experiences have molded us are a necessary beginning point to deeper levels of introspection where past, present, and future all come together.

I have a particular interest in working with Muslims looking to work through obstacles in their life and psychospiritual pain. On top of constantly deepening my skillset clinically, I also pursue education in the foundational Islamic sciences formally and informally as a commitment both to myself as a member of the Muslim community but also to aid my work to support Muslims looking for a religiously and spiritually informed experience in psychotherapy.

Western Psychology frameworks often ignore the impact of colonization on our mental health and well being, focusing on individual models of “pathology” and “wellness.” This framework falls short for most of us! Here are some ways I am decolonizing my therapy practice:

Instead of… I am the expert and you are the patient ❌
You are the expert on your own experience. I am alongside you, supporting you in your healing 💯

Instead of…focusing on symptoms and DSM 5 diagnoses❌
Understanding issues and experiences through a trauma-informed and culturally-aware lens 💯

Instead of…You are the problem and you need individual solutions❌
-Our suffering is often the result of oppressive systems. We must name and understand these systems in order to begin to heal. Our healing will come through community, relationships, and connection to our roots. 💯

What do you think of these changes? Please share your thoughts below!

We are very excited to introduce our newest therapist at Hikma Counseling, Leena Abushanab, LPC! Leena is now accepting new clients and has evening and weekend availability. Read more about Leena below:

My name is Leena Abushanab, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Illinois. I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Benedictine University. I deeply value holistic healing, self-care, and self-discovery. I believe that mental health healing can be one of the most profound methods of self-care, and it’s my passion to support others on this journey.

I believe every person has an inner light, one that may sometimes dim due to life’s challenges. Support and guidance can rekindle this light, allowing one to heal and grow. I have a special place in my heart for women’s issues, domestic violence, and sexual wellness concerns.

I am a bilingual counselor fluent in Arabic, and my approach integrates various therapeutic techniques, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) informed, and Narrative Therapy. I believe in meeting each individual where they are, as there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to mental health care.

It is my role to remind you that you have the power to heal. My goal is to be one of the many avenues of comfort in your journey, offering support for your struggles and challenges.

My favorite quote is: “Be the moon in somebody’s night. Be the ease during someone’s hardship.” – Yasmin Mogahed.

This journey is about you and your growth, so let’s begin.

Eid Mubarak to my Muslim community! I know one of the most fun and exciting parts of Eid can be sharing our photos with family and friends, and of course on social media. Sometimes, though, this expectation can become stressful, creating pressure to look and celebrate in certain ways on Eid.

No day is completely perfect. There will be parts that are joyful, and parts that are tiring. Parts that are fun, and parts that are stressful. This is completely normal! It’s okay if your Eid was a little different this year. Maybe you are overwhelmed or exhausted after Ramadan, maybe your kids had multiple tantrums at Eid brunch (🙋🏻‍♀️), or you are far from family and community. How was your Eid? I hope you were able to celebrate in some way and had some moments of joy, worship, and celebration! Eid Mubarak.

Many of us start Ramadan feeling highly motivated and with many goals. It’s easy to feel discouraged when things are not going quite how we planned. “All or Nothing” thinking may tell us that because we haven’t accomplished ALL of our goals, we have failed, or that we might as well give up because we are so far behind.

It is important to challenge these thoughts and realize that there is so much in between these two ends. If you are struggling with a goal, such as reading a chapter of Quran each day, try to break it down into something smaller and more manageable, such as reading for 10 minutes each day. If you have not been able to pray all 5 prayers, focus on being consistent and timely with 1 or 2, then work your way up. There is still plenty of time left in this beautiful month.

Ramadan Mubarak! Ramadan is a sacred month for Muslims, as it was the month that the Quran, our holy book, was revealed. Muslims who are able to, fast from sunrise to sunset each day as a practice of spiritual discipline. It is a time in which we are encouraged to increase our worship, give in charity, and reflect on our purpose.

Ramadan can bring a lot of joy and excitement as well as challenges for many of us. I hope it brings you the benefit you are seeking. In the coming weeks, I will be sharing a few posts on how to make the most of Ramadan, inshaAllah (God Willing).

What is your favorite part of Ramadan? What is the hardest part? I would love to hear from you.

Through studies involving thousands of couples over several decades, Dr. John Gottman can predict whether a couple will stay together or divorce with 94% accuracy!

Happy couples had the following characteristics:

🔑Express fondness and appreciation- Maybe your partner “knows” you love them, but when was the last time you expressed it? Fondness and appreciation can be expressed in many ways, including spoken words, notes, text messages, a warm smile or a big hug.

🔑Approach conflicts like a team- All couples have conflict. Happy couples are able to manage their conflicts and dialogue about problems, rather than trying to “win” the fight. By listening and understanding each other, you can more easily come to a compromise or solution.

🔑More positive than negative interactions- No couple is positive all the time, but successful couple focus on the positive in their relationships, and have more positive than negative interactions, even while having conflict discussions.

Relationships are hard work. What is your biggest challenge in your relationship?

This message is for all the perfectionists (or recovering perfectionists) out there. It is great to strive to do our best each day, but remember that our best looks different on different days! Your best efforts on a day when you got a full nights sleep will be different than your best effort on a day when you are tired, feeling anxious, or coping with a lot of stress. Let’s practice some self compassion and consider these situational factors. No one is constantly at 100%.
