🩺 Understanding the "Number Needed to Treat" (NNT): How Effective Are Medications, Really? 🩺

Ever wondered how effective a treatment or medication truly is? That's where the concept of "Number Needed to Treat" (NNT) comes in! The NNT tells us how many people need to receive a treatment for just one person to benefit. It’s a powerful way to look at the real-world impact of a treatment beyond just percentages or technical jargon.

💊 Example: For someone at risk of cardiovascular disease, it’s estimated that 10 people would need to take statins for 10 years to prevent one case of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

What about exercise? We don't have an NNT for it—yet! While exercise itself isn’t studied this way, we do know that cardiac rehabilitation has shown consistent heart-health benefits over the past 20 years.

⚠️ Another Key Metric: Number Needed to Harm (NNH)
This is the flip side of NNT, showing how many people might experience adverse effects from a treatment. For example, depending on individual risk factors, someone taking statins might be more likely to develop Type II diabetes than avoid a clogged artery.

🗣️ Takeaway: Ask your doctor to explain the full risks and potential benefits of any medication they recommend. Understanding NNT and NNH can empower you to make informed choices for your health!
