MACROS AND BOOZE

If you’re tracking your macros and want to make steady progress, I vote to just opt out of alcohol altogether.

You CAN drink and still make progress. You can also add your alcohol into your daily macros to stay consistent with your tracking.

Here’s why I say don’t do it though…

1. Alcohol inhibits protein synthesis and slows down metabolic processes. You’ll still make fitness/physique progress but it’ll be much slower.

2. As someone who’s tried it, measuring out alcohol to the exact fluid ounce and adding it to an app makes me feel like I’m being evaluated by an AA sponsor.

Alcohol isn’t healthy. We all know this. Do your bod a favor and take a nice long break from it. You’ll be shocked at how fast your body composition changes!!!!

You’ll also have better workouts, energy, and sleep.

…. And stress management.

…. And you’ll save a ton of money.

Every year, I take a couple of months off from alcohol. It’s always an amazing reset and a nice reminder of what a mostly booze free life looks like.

After spending the start of 2023 alcohol free, here’s what I relearned about the sober life:

Your weekends feel longer.

The muscle gains are phenomenal.

Athletic performance increases dramatically and even the hardest workout feels great.

You sleep like the dead.

Your mental focus and drive are through the roof.

For the ladies, shark week is far less eventful.

Your bank account loves you.

You don’t have hangxiety the next day wondering how much you overshared the night before.

Big fan of the sober life!

I do having boozy plans in the future. Vacations, celebrations, and even the occasional date night; it’s fun to get loosey goosey every now and then. But taking prolonged breaks helps remind me that I never NEED alcohol and how great I feel when I don’t drink.

*Full disclosure: I broke my 2023 sober streak on date night this last weekend. 3 High Noons was enough to make me feel giggly… but also mildly hungover and in need of a nap the next day 😂
No guilt though. Just a reminder of how hard drinking can be on the body and why it should be done in moderation.

If boozin’ is part of your regular routine, I dare you to take a break and see how good you feel.

Training around your cycle; a post for the ladies.

*Gentlemen, if you track your moon cycle or whatever, advise with your guru. Or just don’t appropriate va**na culture; it’s not fun out here.

Now, there are doctors, trainers, holistic coaches, and so many other “health experts” on social media preaching the importance of altering your training for those post ovulation weeks. I’m not a doctor but I think the studies that say “high intensity workouts cause fat storage and muscle wasting” are subjective.

If it is the week of your lady times and you have the energy and drive to go ham on a workout, you go HAM! You tear that s**t up!

The main point here is listen to your body. Modify however you feel that you need to, but don’t fear attempting a PR or hitting a conditioning workout because an “expert” said so. On the other hand, if you’re not feeling a tough workout because it feels like a fat man is sitting on your uterus, then you rest.

Listen to your body!

Great sources of protein as per hot TikTok influencers:

H**p hearts
Peanut butter
Beans
Any nut (shibby)
Soy
Seeds
And last but not least… fekkin peas!

All of these foods have less than 10g of protein per serving!

The damn dough in a single slice of pizza has more protein than a serving of these advertised “significant source of protein” foods.

I’m not crapping on any of the above foods; which are solid sources of FAT and not protein. My goal is to remind people what a significant source of protein actually looks like; which is more than 10g. Shiiiiiiiit, I’m not getting out of bed for under 20g.

Be mindful of dips**t marketing and remember nothing tops animal protein when it comes to quantity and bioavailability.

For the love of all things holy, do not waste time, frustration, or money on any type of marketed “detox” method to kick off your 2023.

It’s peak time of year for influencers to peddle their powders, teas, foot patches, and detoxifying yoni eggs aka hippie crotch rockets.

(Crotch rocket might be rude. Full disclosure I haven’t done enough gina egg research.)

Most of us are smart enough not to believe a greens powder is going to get rid of all the bad decisions we made in 2022; but just in case anyone needs a little reminder….

Do you p*e?
Do you p**p?
Do you sweat?
Do you own kidney?
Do you own a liver?

Guess what. You’re detoxing on the daily. And it’s fo free.

“Cardio is killing your gains”…. I’ve used that douche-y bro excuse to get out of doing it too 😂

Strength training is essential.
Getting steps in (walking) is imperative.
But doing legit metabolic conditioning is the cherry on top of a dope ass training program.

Don’t skip your cardio, my dudes.

Oh, Liver King. Sure, that walking balloon animal is absolutely full of dogs**t for telling the world he got those massive yitties by eating raw liver. However, it doesn’t negate the fact that liver is still a dope ass addition to your diet. Especially if you’re an athlete.

Check the macros for just a 6oz portion:
49g protein
9g fat
230 calories

Gain city, bruh.

Liver also has some of the most BIOAVAILABLE nutrients of any animal protein. Iron, zinc, folate, and essential vitamins are in their most absorbable form in liver; according to people way smarter than me that did a series of science things to determine that.

It also has an awesome flavor profile if you prepare it right.

You don’t have to eat it raw!

Daily life isn’t a f**kin’ episode of Fear Factor!

Don’t cancel liver.

Influencer marketing be like “Top 5 ab exercises to sn**ch your waist” as they post a video of them doing hella crunches and sit ups.

It’d be super dope if some of these fitness influencers would throw out some other details about their fitness regimen and mention the fact that their diet is probably on point.

You can get abs and build a strong core while doing literally ZERO ab exercises. They can help… but they’re not the end all be all. Strength training of any kind is essentially a core workout. Pair that with a diet high in protein and an appropriate caloric intake and you’ll be “sn**ched”. Easy. No gimmicks. Just lift weights and feed your muscles the right stuff.

Not knocking ab workouts or core movements, just saying that that’s not the why the hot influencer has abs.

Stay suspicious, my dudes.

If the cold weather has your joints all achy and you’re walking around feeling like the Tin Man, go lift some weights.

Holidays are coming. Unclench your bu****le stressing about your fitness progress. You know the drill:

🏋🏻‍♀️ Keep your gym routine going. It’s dark by 4pm, wtf else are you going to do?

🥩 Continue eating well and prioritizing protein.

🥂 Take ‘er easy on the booze. Overdoing the alcohols is the ultimate hindrance to your progress. Stay hydrated!

Absolutely enjoy your holidays though. Eat the dessert, have seconds, enjoy a few cocktails on Turkey day and Christmas. All you have to do is NOT go apes**t on food and drink those days and then boom, you’re back on your grind the next day. Easy peasy.

Happy holidays, my dudes 🥰

It’s officially my last week getting to workout and train athletes in person at before I head back to Wyoming permanently and I have some parting words….

Lead coaches are some of the best humans you could possibly be trained by, let alone be acquainted with. The care, passion, and attention to detail that goes into athlete programming is beyond impressive and I’m grateful to have learned so much from working at this gym. You definitely get what you pay for as an athlete when you train there.

I’ll still be a Lead trainer for other projects that has in the works but I’m super bummed I won’t get to work alongside my fellow Lead coaches 😭

When I see you Lead coaches this week, you didn’t see this sappy post. Be cool.
