Good evening Austin,

How about a sweet, feel-good story before the night ends?

This past Saturday, October 11, 2025, AVAMPS held our 25th annual community health fair and celebrated our 25th Anniversary as a non-profit medical organization serving thousands of uninsured and high-risk Vietnamese individuals in Austin and its surrounding counties.

More than 25 years ago thousands of Vietnamese people immigrated from Vietnam and settled in Austin, TX. Though it was a small community at the time, one thing was clear-many Vietnamese people suffered from poor health. The Vietnamese people did not have health insurance, they did not speak English, and they did not have transportation to address their medical needs. This astute observation was made by several healthcare professionals, and they knew that something must be done.

Out of this social and health disparities emerged Austin Vietnamese American Medical Professional Society (AVAMPS) in the year 2000. The five founders of AVAMPS were Dr. Duc Tran, Family Physician, Mrs. Tuyet Tran, Pharmacist, Mr. Cuong Pham, Pharmacist, Mrs. Hue Nguyen, MSN-Registered Nurse, and Mrs. Hoa Dinh, Dental Hygienist. They began to provide basic primary care to the Vietnamese community.

Today, 25 years later, we continue to carry out the mission of- increasing the health and wellness of the Vietnamese individuals who are uninsured, high-risk, and the elderly. We address basic health needs by offering primary care strategies such as screening for diseases, education on diseases and their maintenance, and referral to community services. We have one major community health fair in October and 3 to 5 mini-health events throughout the year. We also collaborate with government agencies, other healthcare organizations, and non-profit organizations in an effort to holistically meet the health needs of the Vietnamese individuals.

AVAMPS's current officers are Dr. Viet Tran- President, Dr. Luan Tran- CEO, Hoa Dinh- Treasure, Linh Nguyen- Secretary, Nam Nguyen- Technical Support, and Tram Huynh- Community Liaison.

At the 25th Anniversary celebration we honored 14 individuals or organizations for either contributing financially, providing compassionate community services or both to AVAMPS and to the Vietnamese community.
1) Gilead Sciences, Financial Supporter, over 20 years
Mr. Wayde Troup representing Gilead Science

2) Mrs.Trang Nguyen with Everose Home Care, Financial Supporter
and Compassionate Community Services over 20 years

3) Mrs. Mercy Nkansah with Progressive Home Health, Financial

Good morning everyone!!!

Our 25th Annual Vietnamese Community Health Fair is coming up this Saturday, October 11, 2025, 8am -11am at Juan Navarro Early College (1201 Payton Gin Road, Austin, TX). This event is OPEN to the PUBLIC.

I want to encourage everyone to attend this FREE, comprehensive healthcare event with a few final thoughts.

Chief Executive Officer of AVAMPS
Austin Vietnamese American Medical Professional Society

Here are the TOP 5 REASONS for attending this FREE health fair:

*Number 5:
Fellowship and connect with your Vietnamese and American friends/family in the AUSTIN community at a FREE healthcare event. Study shows that engaging in social events improves mental and physical health thereby increasing happiness. You will see many familiar faces, meet new people, and get connected to even more people that will improve your quality of life.

*Number 4:
Receive free gifts provided by many organizations. There will be over 50 raffle gifts, in addition to vision health products, reading glasses, dental products, blood pressure machines, tote bags, HEB cards, and much more.

*Number 3:
This event is especially for adults without health insurance, those who lack transportation to primary care or specialty care, and those who lack English proficiency regarding learning about their health status and needs. Our volunteers are Vietnamese speaking, and free take home patient teaching materials are also in Vietnamese. Attending our event is a one-stop shop for getting all your health needs taken care of in one day, in a fun and friendly environment.

*Number 2:
We have over 20 health services at our event from disease screening, vaccines, and patient education.
Individuals who do have health insurance are not guaranteed to have better health. Attending our comprehensive event ensures that you can receive services your insurance does not cover such as dental, vision, foot screening, learning CPR, education on staying healthy, learning more about common health illnesses and maintaining safety. There is something for everyone, such as free enrollment of health insurance, and consultation for Living Will
and Trust.

But perhaps the most important thing we offer at our event is the value of -a human touch and connection. If you attend, you can experience a hug, a smile, a warm conversation, putting a name to a face, and forming a trusting relationship with the healthcare individuals and organizations in the Vietnamese community.

*And the Number 1 is…
The Vietnamese community health fair event is totally FREE and is delivered by high quality healthcare professionals and organizations. Healthcare providers from areas of specialty (Spine, Colon Cancer, Hepatitis, Gerontology, Family medicine, General Surgery, Vision, Dental) are available for personalized consultation and will answer any health concerns you may have. We want you to feel that we care for your well-being. We want you to take advantage of this valuable service.

AVAMPS welcomes you to come to our health event from 8am- 11am and stay for our 25th Anniversary Celebration from 11am-2pm.

THANK YOU. AVAMPS

Austin Vietnamese American Medical Professional Society (AVAMPS) was invited to participate at the Free Community Health Fair organized by Austin Public Health (APH) in collaboration with Austin Asian Community Health Initiative (AACHI). The free community event took place at the Asian American Resource Center (AARC) on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

One of AVAMPS’s missions is to provide free Primary Care to any population. Primary care is defined as any strategy to prevent, through screening or education, the onset of a medical illness. At the event, we provided primary care to children, adults, and seniors. We checked blood pressures hence screening for high blood pressure (Hypertension). We provided patient education on proper nutrition and hydration and reinforced the importance of being physically active. This educational strategy was aimed at encouraging optimal growth and health potential, minimizing obesity, and maintaining bone, muscle, and physical health.

We were so impressed by the many children that wanted their blood pressure checked!!! The children especially enjoyed all the samples of food on display for educational purposes. Of course, they were disappointed that it was for demonstration only, not to take home. The children received gifts and colorful handouts illustrating the food/water pyramid and the physical activity pyramid. We encouraged that these handouts be posted on the refrigerator for the entire family to view and follow. We loved that AVAMPS empowered these youngsters to be leaders within their home thus promoting a healthier lifestyle for their family.

THANK YOU, APH!!! THANK YOU, AACHI!!! THANK YOU, AARC!!! And THANK YOU, to our community partners and colleagues and of course the VOLUNTEERS!

This past Saturday, June 28, 2025, our health event offered four important services to the Vietnamese community. American Vietnamese American Medical Professional Society’s (AVAMPS) healthcare professionals (Physicians, Pharmacist) offered personalized health education to everyone on site. Austin Public health administered FREE adult vaccines thereby improving population health. Asian American Community Health Initiative (AACHI) enrolled individuals who are without health insurance hence ensuring access to healthcare. And Mr. Tri Ngo presented education on Long-Term Care insurance which will help seniors plan for future health needs.

Story of the Day: There was a Vietnamese gentleman who biked to the event and was first in line by 8:55am. He claims that he has been looking forward to this event for 3 months and is so happy he is first in line. His bike was very old yet functional enough to get him to and from the event. AVAMPS plans to follow up with this gentleman to encourage and empower him to maintain his health, and AVAMPS may need to replace his bike when that time comes.

This is a reminder that healthcare is year-round, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and our event created the opportunity to serve the most vulnerable and marginalized Vietnamese individuals in our community.

AVAMPS thanks the 25 volunteers that made this event a huge success. The volunteers are invaluable to fulfilling our mission to serve our community!!! We also THANK the Austin Vietnamese Senior Citizen (AVSC) Center for allowing us to host the important event. This Vietnamese senior center will celebrate their 39th anniversary this year and are open to all adults!!! They are the beating heart of the Vietnamese community. Please join them every Mondays and Thursdays for socialization, authentic Vietnamese food, dancing, and of course Karaoke!!!

Our motto- Stronger Together- makes us a cohesive and resilient community.

Hello Austin,

There will be a FREE vaccine event Saturday, June 28, 2025 from 10am to 1pm at 8222 Jamestown Dr., #131, Austin, TX (Austin Vietnamese Senior Citizen center). Austin Public Health will administer the first or second doses of COVID, Shingles, Pneumonia, Hepatitis A or B, TD, and Monkey Pox vaccines. We encourage individuals to come at 10am because there is a 30-person limit.

As usual, there will be Vietnamese health professionals onsite to take blood pressures, review medications, provide patient teaching for health issues, and make referrals to community services.

Also free to the public is registering for free medical insurance called Medical Access Program (MAP) through the Austin Asian Community Health Initiative (AACHI). This free medical insurance is for individuals who are refugees, immigrants, or uninsured adults living in the Travis County. There will be translators available to assist.

Finally, Mr. Tri Ngo will provide free education on Long-term care insurance and how to afford it. This program is aimed at young individuals, beginning in their 50s, who want to plan for their future health needs. Long-term care insurance pays for caregivers to care for you while you live in your own home. It also pays for assisted living, memory care, or nursing home placements. Waiting to pay cash for caregivers to care for you- at home or in a facility when you turn 85 years old, will cost more than $20,000.00 a month.

Please come join us and tell all your friends about the free health event.

In the meantime, please stay well hydrated and stay indoors as much as possible.
