Royal Oak parents Mallory and Matthew Meyer shared with the Royal Oak Review the story of their second child, John Tyler, and the struggles they went through during his premature birth.

John Tyler Meyer defied the odds when he was born prematurely Sept. 20 at just 31 weeks via emergency cesarean section, weighing only 3 pounds, 11.8 ounces.

Mallory and Matthew Meyer went through a flurry of emotions during the long, and scary, process to keep their baby alive.

At 32 weeks pregnant, Breana Long had an emergency C-section due to lack of movement from her daughter.

Brooke Ashley was born premature weighing 3 pounds, 6 ounces. "Despite being so tiny and battling preemie anemia, she was perfect in every way. Seeing her for the first time filled me with a love I didn’t know was possible and a fierce determination to stay strong for her," Breana said.

She spent 38 days in the NICU. "It was the most emotional, stressful, and exhausting time of my life," Breana said. "But through it all, the team members were beyond amazing, attentive, compassionate, and so supportive."

"They cared for Brooke like she was their own, and I will forever be grateful for their role in our journey."

Brooke recently turned one! Breana shares, "She is happy, healthy, full of life, and thriving beyond what I ever imagined."

For 15 days in December, community members visit our campus in Royal Oak to shine flashlights to remind pediatric patients they aren’t alone and wish them sweet dreams.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Trunk or Treat events hosted by our teams across Southeast Michigan. Each event had a great turnout and many notable, spook-tacular costumes!

If you're planning to trick-or-treat later this evening, remember these helpful safety tips:

💡 Stay visible in the dark! Consider using glow sticks or flashlights to help children see and be seen by drivers.
👟 Always use sidewalks and look both ways before crossing the street.
🚗 Be extra cautious while driving on Halloween. Focus on the road and slow down in residential neighborhoods.

A 13-year-old boy in Royal Oak is back at it this Halloween, bringing the frights and haunts while making a difference in the lives of other local kids.

Dr. Lesly Hendershot, psychology, knows that early emotional support and mental health awareness for kids are essential, which is why she's excited that Corewell Health Children's in Southeast Michigan recently partnered with the Kids Mental Health Foundation to provide resources and tools to help the kids closest to you.

The materials offered make it easier to start meaningful conversations about mental health and provide practical support right where kids are, without waiting for a referral to a specialist.

"Knowledge truly is power, and these resources help break down stigma, build understanding, and support kids in ways that are accessible and impactful," Dr. Hendershot said.

She states that it’s important that we take an active role in raising awareness about the importance of monitoring and addressing children’s mental health early and often. "Physical and mental health are deeply connected, and by increasing awareness, we help reduce stigma and normalize the need to care for both aspects of well-being."

Dr. Stuart Covi, a pediatric cardiologist specializing in fetal cardiac imaging and cardiac screening, joined Corewell Health Children’s for its unwavering commitment to advancing pediatric care. His passion lies in preventing sudden cardiac events - one of the most powerful impacts of pediatric cardiology.

“I take time for my patients to be completely heard and thoroughly treated, as though they were my own family,” says Dr. Covi. “Corewell Health provides all the necessary resources and support for providers to save lives.”

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Covi continues to give back to the community. As a Cub Scout Leader, he and his children volunteer for food drives, meals for the homeless and more.
