ʜᴏᴡ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘᴜsʜ ᴏᴜᴛ ᴀʟʟ ᴛʜᴇ ɴᴏɴ-ᴇssᴇɴᴛɪᴀʟ ɴᴏɪsᴇ? ʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀʀᴇ ᴍʏ 5 ᴛʀɪᴄᴋs!

The current state of our world is a very likely external culprit, but when I find my brain overcrowded with all this non-essential noise, I use 5 tricks to help me present my best self to the universe.

This non-essential noise can take the shape of boredom, unfulfillment and unmet expectations, your nosy work neighbor, judgy relatives, rude stranger, and more. Mine is probably a combination of some of these. What does yours look like?

Here are 5 tricks I’ve been using to find clarity:
🔷Write out my daily and weekly goals in my bujo
🔷Take up activities that make me feel good like meditation🧘‍♀️and volunteering
🔷Stay open to new ideas and possibilities, like experimenting with new recipes😋and reading📚
🔷Let go of the need to control and have faith; faith that things will work out eventually and faith that my tribe will back me up if I go wayward
🔷Call up📲my people to explore solutions together or to simply be vulnerable with each other💙

We’re already living in tough times, so you have to be kind to yourself. If you do this, your 💙 will feel lighter. has put enough stress on our lives—personally, at home, and at work. This is not a hoax.

Sometimes 1️⃣ day of stress turns into days of overwhelm. Like an ugly, never ending sequence that is absolutely no fun. I’ve needed to remind myself to be kind to me so frequently these past few months to get out of my head.

I share this with you so that when you’re starting to feel down or things aren’t going your way, you can take a moment to get yourself out of that sequence. Say it loud, whisper it, or announce it in your head! What matters is YOU say it to YOU.

So how do you do this? Here’s your ℞!
🔷Pause when you reach “that point”
🔷Inhale, exhale
🔷Say “Be kind to yourself” slowly and as many times as you need😉 (I say it ~3x)
🔷Inhale, exhale
🔷Get back to being the bomb boss you are

💵 Income related health disparities continue to grow in the US

💵 Income is strongly associated with morbidity and mortality across the income distribution
💵 Low income folks have higher rates of chronic illness (e.g., diabetes, heart disease)
💵 Low income folks have greater barriers to healthcare access

Policy initiatives that supplement income and improve educational opportunities, housing prospects, and social mobility—particularly in childhood—can reduce poverty and lead to downstream health effects not for low and middle income people.

Americans need
💙 Access to affordable health insurance like through Covered California
💙 Jobs that provide sick time/paid leave
💙 Programs like federal loan subsidies/forgiveness, WIC, SNAP-Ed, Medicare/Medicaid, CHIP

The gathers data used to delivery services, products, and support for the US population. People experiencing homelessness will also be counted.

⚠️ Americans spend ~70% of their time at home

⚠️ Residents living in poor housing conditions (e.g., homes constructed with materials laced with toxins, unsafe housing districts) are at great risk for developing illness/disease, could worsen existing chronic conditions, or even cause death.

⚠️ and have made these substandard living conditions increasingly problematic.
⚠️With , residents are unable to escape the very thing that could be endangering them—invisible or visible toxicants.

✅ Support initiatives that help construct safe, affordable housing
✅ Enforce building/housing codes and zoning policies
✅ Support for smoke-free housing
✅ Advocate for proactive free/low cost housing inspections
✅ Understand the materials used in your home and opt for safer/cleaner options, if possible

🎓 Educational attainment is influenced by socioeconomic status and environment
🎓 Educational attainment and earning potential are positively correlated
🎓 Fully employed Asians and Whites with Bachelor’s degrees have higher median earnings than their Black and Hispanic peers
🎓 There’s a ~30% wage difference between Asians/White and Blacks/Hispanics

More on California university education + homelessness:
✏️ College homelessness has become a prevalent issue in the US ✏️ New legislation are being developed to support homeless/low income students so they can enroll in university, increase their chances of graduating, and help improve their economic standing ✏️ More universities are establishing food banks to ensure that homeless/low income students have access to nutritious, affordable goods while completing their education

👇What do you think is going well (or not so well) with the US education system?

09/04/2020

Air pollution exposure worsens serious respiratory and lung conditions, like asthma and pulmonary hypertension.

Poor air quality disproportionately affects vulnerable populations including those living with chronic illness, the pregnant, young children, elderly, homeless, and communities of color.

Research on pregnant women in various stages of gestation show that exposures to particulate matter (PM) of 2.5μm or 10μm can impact the growth and development of a fetus (head size, limb length, birthweight, etc.) into adulthood. Affected individuals could present neurological issues, respiratory disorders, and other developmental concerns across their lifespan and greatly impact their quality of life.

💨 California Ambient Air Quality Standards (1959): CDPH must establish air quality & emission standards
💨 AB 617: local air districts to adopt community emissions reduction programs
💨 AB 1274: new vehicle 6-8yr exemptions from Smog Check programs; subject to smog abatement fee

We need to:
⬆️ Promote efforts to achieve clean air
⬆️ Modify air quality standards
⬇️ Reduce ambient air pollution standards
⬇️ Reduce PM concentration thresholds

You are not alone💙
1️⃣ in 5️⃣ Americans experiences some form of mental illness. While this impacts the individual, it also has a ripple effect on families, communities, and our society.
We need more training around cultural competency and cultural humility training to help healthcare providers be better at providing mental health services to underserved communities.
We need to help people experiencing mental illness by connecting them to medical and support services.
With the response involving , sheltering in place, and the rising , more people are experiencing a decline in their mental health. Here are some quick ways to cope with the stress:

💙 Eat and sleep well. Stay active.
💙 Do fun activities.
💙 Connect with family and friends.
My heart goes out to those who are apart from their loved ones during this challenging time. I send my condolences to those unable to spend final moments with their loved ones.
Thank you to the who continue to serve our communities despite the daily danger of potential viral exposure.
