I'm Renata Akinkuowo, LCSW in northern CA. I was asked to host a mental health summit for communities of color in the Greater Sacramento area and wanted to share and ask others to share the details of this event. The summit is FREE but open to all communities of color and those who serve them.

Mental health or mind health is just as important as your physical health. You're worth it, take good care of both!

Refreshing day in the therapy neighborhood. I am officially licensed and have launched my private practice! Welcome to 'Gracefully Rooted Therapy!'

Therapy…ah, it’s a word getting a lot of buzz these days. Well one thing for sure is that mental “health” is just as important as your physical health. Take good care of it and if you need support, please take that seriously and seek to be healthy….mentally!!!! I would personally suggesting speaking to someone and finding that person through a google search or similar platforms to Psychology Today. This platform and very similar platforms are connecting you to therapist in your area.

The Power of the 'Let Go'
So this week as it sometimes happens to me and I can't imagine it does not happen to you (that's a point to remind you that this is normal LOL) but those fleeting thoughts about THE something happening from your past that was painful, disappointing, challenging and you having a tendency to spiral or at least think on it to the point that your mood changes and you are faced with that moment when you recognize it. Well...I just told myself oh no honey, institute the 'Let Go!' Yes, outloud I said, "girl let that go." We really do have a choice as to what we think and sometimes you have to 'encourage yourself.' I did and man did that thing change quick for me. Now it is true, you may have to choose the 'let go' several times until your thoughts change or your mood shifts but try it. Just tell yourself to "let it go," it does heal your heart.

And in case you were wondering, yes my internal voice is southern (wink)!

Thinking I would like to start something new that I’ve been sharing with the couples I work with called “Relationship Connection Points.” Well here’s a go at it.

Relationship Connection Point:
It’s super important to understand your past.
Why, because it is our earlier life experiences that shape who we become and how we engage and “love (in action)” in relationships.

Dr. Alexandra Solomon purports that “as children, we are basically “students” in the “classroom” of our family system.” What we take in from the family classroom teaches lessons about “closeness, affection, trust, emotions, power, gender and how to handle differences” and/or conflict between people. If we understand this, how would we engage with one another going forward? My hope in my own life is that we operate from a place of knowing that how we show up in marriage initially comes from a place and just like school, we may have to learn some new concepts in order to grow.

Sometimes you need to take a break, refocus and recalibrate to gain momentum, please do not apologize for that, that is a form of self-care. :-)

Powerful message about

The Company I keep,

Here's a quote from superstar neurological researcher Dr. Caroline Leaf.

"By putting ourselves in an environment that encourages us to live well, we can improve our overall quality of life and longevity. ."

Here's another one from another brain superstar Dr. Daniel Amen.

“Surrounding yourself with positive, healthy people--the fastest way to get healthy is to find the healthiest people you can stand and spend as much time around them as possible.”

The work of developing healthy friendships is not for the faint of heart. Although, the healthier our friends are the easier they are to do life with. The challenge is our own lack of personal health gets in our way. Think about the friends Jesus kept. They abandoned him on the first Good Friday when things went south, so they weren't perfect, but they came through in the end.

Take a moment to reflect on your life today on this Good Friday. How do your friends do life? Do they love well, can they admit their faults, are they living on mission and do they celebrate you and others?

Quality friends are not perfect, they are flawed like everyone else, but they know it. They desire to reconcile when they let you down. They don't need to control you and others. They will allow you to suffer when you keep making the same mistakes. They are at peace with themselves and have a sense of purpose and they know how to have fun.

Our health and happiness are greatly affected by the company we keep. So in addition to our friends don't forget to include on your list, quality time with the King of Kings.

Happy Ressurection Day, Doug...

Sorry for the inconsistency in content....the reality...I believe that in this time we have all had to come to grips with doing what we can feasibly manage. With that being said, take good care of yourself (and family) by trying not to overextend or overcommit yourself. Take breaks and when the feeling of isolation seems overwhelming, let your semi creative side pour out (🤪my attempt at a golf game I found online)...well sort of.
