There are three epidemics of hormonal problems in America today,
too much insulin, too much cortisol, and not enough thyroid hormone. These are all interconnected and affect every other major category of hormones, including our s*x hormones.
Fix Your Broken Brain By Balancing Your Hormones
INSULIN
• Sugar promotes high levels of insulin, and when we eat too much
sugar, too much insulin is produced to keep blood sugar balanced,
which leads to insulin resistance
• Consequences of insulin resistance include depression, dementia,
weight gain, heart disease, and cancer
• Reversing insulin resistance can be as easy as adding exercise,
relaxation, and supplements to your daily routine
Dementia is sometimes
referred to as "Type 3
Diabetes" because of the
impact sugar has on
the brain.
THYROID
• Thyroid hormones are sensitive to multiple influences and problems
with your thyroid are indicative of issues in our diet, lifestyle, and
environment
• Exposure to environmental toxins such as pollution, petrochemicals
(PCBs), industrial waste, and heavy metals have increased and so have
thyroid problems
• Most common symptoms of low thyroid function often go unnoticed,
and can include the following:
• Feeling tired, fatigue, sluggishness, trouble getting up in the
morning, depression, memory loss, insomnia, dry skin and dry hair,
constipation, fluid retention, menstrual problems, PMS, hair loss,
cracked or chipping finger nails, low s*x drive, weight gain, muscle
aches, cramps
• Food allergies are often causes of low thyroid function, and are most
likely related to gluten consumption
• Selenium, zinc, fish oil, iodine, and tyrosine are all vital for thyroid
function, and many people are deficient in most, if not all, of these
essential vitamins and minerals
S*X HORMONES
• S*x hormones act on the brain directly to affect mood and cognition
• As men and women age, estrogen increases and progesterone
decreases in both s*xes, leading to low energy, depression, and low
s*x-drive
Estrogen
• Promotes the production of neurotransmitters, especially serotonin,
the “feel-good” hormone
• Estrogen in the brain is thought to be neuroprotective, potentially
reducing the risk for dementia
• Alcohol damages the liver, and inhibits getting rid of excess
estrogen, which can influence hormone imbalance
• Excess estrogen in the body can cause breast, uterine, and
cervical cancer
Progesterone
• Levels of this hormone drop in PMS and in perimenopause,
leading to increased anxiety and insomnia
• Can reduce anxiety and stress through its actions on GABA
receptors in the brain
Testosterone
• Improves mood, memory, motivation, and overall cognition
• Levels of this hormone drop significantly in both women and
men as they age, and has enormous impact on quality of life
• The drop in levels of this hormone is caused mostly by
weight gain, belly fat, lack of exercise, stress, and high-sugar
diets
• Low testosterone in men linked to insulin resistance
• Raising testosterone levels in men can be done through cutting
out sugar and refined flours from the diet, eating whole foods,
and exercising (strength building)
• Saturated fat and cholesterol can help raise testosterone
levels because testosterone is made from cholesterol
• Especially in older men, testosterone can be raised through
topical bioidentical testosterone
