This is an option for folks that have no supportat all. However, one benefit of having a doula is continuity of care. Meaning when mom goes into labor the room isn't full of strangers.
More often than not doctor she's been seeing won't be on call when it time to give birth. The nurses, while lovely, won't know triggers, anxiety level nor tye voice of overwhelm. Doulas do. We spend much more time with our clients during their pregnancy than the doctors do and certain more than the burses. We get the chance to develop a relationship built on trust & respect. We know them, their medical and mental health history, their triggers and fears. We know the much more than the strangers that work in the hospital. Adding another unknown person into this intimate birth space isn't ideal.
There are situations where it's better than being alone in the delicery room. When the birthing person is incarcerated and the only other person in the room is a corrections officer. When the spouse is deployed and separated from the family. If the partner is incarcerated or deceased. But as a regular practice having another someone that works for the medical system that doesn't know the the person giving birth isn't helpful and can cause more harm than good.
Ok so many things to say
1. Care with a doula happens BEFORE birth. They have no care or trust established.
2. You can’t work FOR the system and believe you can change the system. You think they’re going to sacrifice their check when their boss is the one causing harm
3. I’m just curious of the processing… these folks really believe we’re glorified water bringers…
Just running errands for the family lol
it’s zero respect for the art and science of doula work.
The issues are systemic.
