At least 116 people were killed by police in response to a mental health crisis in 2025 (US).* Implementing alternative responses to mental health crises, intimate partner violence, and wellness checks would drastically reduce the number of community members murdered by police each year. That is why we do the work we do, to be that alternative. Call or Text 510-999-9641, Wednesday through Sunday, 8pm to Midnight for mental health support and crisis response that does not involve police.

It is important that people know the lethal risk of law enforcement response to mental health crises so that other solutions and responses can be found. For mental health support resources in Sacramento county, use our MH First Resource Guide: bit.ly/APTPSacSupport.

Did you know that 1 in 5 adults experience a mental illness each year in the US? In 2025, there were 6,665,000 Californians living with a mental health condition. These numbers prove that struggling with mental health is far more common than many people believe.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. If you or someone you love struggles with mental health, know that you are not alone. And know that we are here for you. Call or text our Mental Health First Line at 510-999-9641, 8pm to 12am, Wednesday through Sunday for mental health support and crisis response that does not involve police. Because asking for help should be met with care and empathy, not violence and scrutiny.

Statistics based on 2025 data from the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI).

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. And we need to be clear about what that means.

Awareness is not enough if the only response people have in a crisis is calling 911.

Too many of our people are met with force instead of care. Too many situations escalate because the response is rooted in policing, not healing.

We are building something different.

Join our Mental Health First Crisis Response Training and learn how to recognize, assess, and respond to a mental health crisis without relying on police. This is about equipping our communities with the tools to show up for each other with care, safety, and dignity.

Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24
11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Online and free

This two-day training will help you:
• Recognize signs of a mental health crisis
• Respond with de-escalation and care
• Support people without involving law enforcement
• Build community-based safety in real time

This is what it looks like to move from awareness to action.

This is what it looks like to build real alternatives.

This is how we keep each other safe.

Did you know that restraining orders do not require calling the police? Reports can be made online in California. Here are two resources for more information:
- selfhelp.courts.ca.gov/CH-restraining-order/process
- selfhelp.courts.ca.gov/DV-restraining-order/process

Safety looks different for every person. Sometimes the path to safety necessitates a trail of legal paperwork. Often a barrier to starting that process can be fear of law enforcement. There are many ways to create safety without directly involving police, and filing a restraining order online is one.

Call or text 510-999-9641 Wednesday through Sunday, 8pm to Midnight for more information on safety planning and mental health support.

No one should feel shame about seeking support for their mental health. Working to improve or maintain health whether it be physical, mental, or spiritual is always something to celebrate! There are many benefits to destigmatizing mental health support, but here are some of our favorites:
1) More people seek out help. 2) More people accept themselves. 3) More people feel comfortable at work, home, and school. 3) Our community gets stronger.

If you are curious about supporting your mental health or the types of support we offer at MH First, call us at (510) 999-9641, Wednesday through Sunday, 8pm to 12am.

MH First is an alternative crisis response program that does not involve police. We can be reached Wednesday through Sunday, 8pm to 12am at (510) 999-9641. Want to know more? Read below for our frequently asked questions or send us a message. We’re here to help!

“When should I call MH First?”
- When you or others around you are experiencing ANY type of mental health crisis
- When you feel unsafe in your current situation and would like to plan a way out
- When you want to solve conflicts, without violence

“Why are your hours only during the evening?”
- We have found the evening hours to be when our community is in need most for mental health crises and other psychosocial distresses. Alternative mental health options are often available during the day, we want to fill the gap of care at night.

“If MH First serves Sacramento, why is the number using a 510 area code?”
- We support folks in Sacramento AND Oakland. Even though MH First was founded in Sacramento our founding organization, Anti Police-Terror Project, is based in Oakland.

“How can I volunteer with or support MH First?”
- Save our number! Have us ready for when you might need us
- Spread the word! Let friends, family, and coworkers know about this local resource
- Volunteer with us! We hold a two-day training every other month. Sign-up here to get updates and alerts for the next one: bit.ly/aptp-subscribe

MH First Community Crisis Response Two-Part Training on Saturday 3/28 and Sunday 3/29, 11am-3pm via Zoom.

What is community crisis response? This is a decolonized framework for mental and psychosocial distress response focused on de-escalation, safety planning, and helping individuals utilize the resources already available around them. If you want to develop the tools necessary for crisis intervention and simultaneously build a more empathetic future of collective care for our communities, join us.

Who is this training for? EVERYONE! You do not need any prior medical or crisis response experience to take part in the training. Adults of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Whether you just want some tools to help out a friend or are interested in volunteering with us, this is a great way to learn how we keep ourselves and communities safe.

Join us in strengthening our collective ability to keep us safe and make a lasting, positive impact in our communities! The next Mental Health First Community Crisis Training will be on Saturday 3/28 and Sunday 3/29 from 11am to 3pm via Zoom. Register here: bit.ly/mhfirst-training0328

This virtual training is designed to empower community members with the critical skills needed to respond to mental health crises, support those in distress, and refer our community members to healing justice services within our neighborhoods.

Our purpose at MH First is to interrupt and eliminate the need for law enforcement in mental health crisis response by providing peer support, de-escalation assistance, and non-punitive and life-affirming interventions. We work to decriminalize emotional and psychological crises and decrease the stigma around mental health, substance use, and domestic violence while also addressing their root causes: white supremacy, capitalism, and colonialism.
