Sunny gives her account of the eight years she spent in a sheltered workshop making less than minimum wage. Serena talks about the Fair Labor Standards Act Section 14(c) and how it became a way for companies to pay employees with disabilities less.

GT's CEO, Holly Carmichael, shares her tips and experience on being a senior executive in this "Women Of The C-Suite" interview with Authority Magazine.

When asked why it's so important for a business to have a diverse team, Holly replied:

"If everyone looks and thinks the same, you’ll have one answer to a problem. ... At GT, we see diversity as a distinct benefit. It’s a way to understand more about the daily challenges of the people we serve. We’re proud to employ people across 22 states, representing various races, backgrounds and belief systems. We speak 23 languages among us, and about 10% of our employees self-identify as having a disability. This diversity is a strength, and it truly helps us achieve more as an organization."

November 26 is Native American Heritage Day and a time to honor Indigenous cultures. When considering disabilities, did you know:

– 2 in 5 Non-Hispanic American Indians and Alaska Natives have a disability (CDC, Disability Impacts All of Us)

– The highest rate of disability among U.S. children are among Native American children (U.S. Census Bureau)

– Home and Community-Based Services for Indigenous people with disabilities and aging communities can be a more culturally appropriate option for receiving care (Supporting American Indian and Alaska Native People in the Community, Department of Health & Human Services & CMS)

AT GT, we believe that culture should always be considered when discussing Home and Community-Based Services. We also recognize there is much more work we must do to improve our services and connection with Indigenous populations. We have declared our pursuit to be an anti-racist organization. We also continue to use the National Standards for Culturally & Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) as a roadmap for our approach. This helps us to best meet the needs of historically excluded groups.

Valerie Bane: Director of State Services, CA

"MY CHOICE TO JOIN GT INDEPENDENCE WAS AN EASY ONE."

My life’s mission is simply to broaden the scope of mankind’s peripheral vision. My decision to join GT was an easy one. Discovering that the company’s values were born from the Carmichael family’s commitment to giving their son the gift of compassionate care confirmed my belief that growth and selflessness can co-exist. I genuinely believe in the adage “Nothing changes, if nothing changes.” Their singular choice to make a change has now created a mind shift throughout the country. And, once I witnessed that same emphatic energy trickle down to every person on the staff, I knew I was home. I believe that GT’s innovative model is the missing link in creating an environment of optimal care and support. I am excited and prepared to carry this message to Californians.

I’ve spent the last five years as a secondary caregiver for my dad who has an incurable lung disease. Time and time again, he expressed his gratitude for my efforts to ensure that his life remains full. I was welcomed into his personal space because he trusted me in having his best interest at heart. We all deserve to be viewed as more than just account numbers, write-offs and bottom lines. It’s the human element that makes GT exceptional.
