What You Need to Know About Grief

Most of us have experienced the painful loss of a family member, friend, colleague, or pet.

Grief can feel so overwhelming, isolating, and confusing – leaving a person wondering if and how they will ever get through it.

It’s a topic associated with pain, and because pain is uncomfortable many people avoid talking or sharing about it.

This creates a silent agreement among many to avoid facing grief until it finally confronts us, and we have no choice but to swim in an ocean of loss. Here are a few important things to know about grief, whether you are experiencing it yourself or want to support someone who is in the process of grieving.

You lost someone you love and it seems like everyone is saying things like…

“They’re in a better place.”
“You’ll see them again one day.”
“They would want you to move on.”
“At least you got to say goodbye.”
“At least they aren’t in pain anymore.”
“At least you have your happy memories with them…”
“It’s been years…you should be over this.”
“You’ll feel better soon.”

How did you feel after hearing these words while grieving?

Have you heard that statistic that public speaking is most people’s number one fear – rated higher for most folks than their fear of death?

It’s often not the actual act of speaking publicly that we are afraid of. It’s all the negative thoughts and fears in our heads that create the anxiety we feel.

“What if I say the wrong thing? What if I sound stupid? Will they laugh at me? Will I sound weird? What if my mind goes blank? What if I talk too fast? Will they judge me?”

My hands are sweating and my heart is beating just typing these words.

All of these negative thoughts can lead to different symptoms like speech impediments when were speaking, avoiding public speaking all together, sweating nervously, feeling panic in our bodies–or complete panic attacks.

If you haven’t been in counseling before–or if you have and you had a less than stellar experience–you may feel nervous or have questions about what couples therapy will be like. Committed relationships hold our most private moments, and asking for help from a third party may bring up some fears or feelings of nervousness.

This post is meant to help address some of the most common concerns about couples therapy. My answers are my own opinions and reflect how I approach couples therapy. If you have a question that wasn’t included in this post, please feel free to reach out to me–I’m happy to help.

Five Steps to Survive Any Stressful Life Situations

When you get a cut, you put a bandage on it or when you get an infection, you take antibiotics, right?

So why wouldn’t we try to take care of ourselves in times of emotional distress due to unexpected life changes, including frequent arguments with loved ones, unsatisfied relationships, unresolved childhood trauma, or other emotionally related stresses in our life?

We frequently attempt to suppress the emotional pain down, and are expected to just “get over” emotional deep wounds.

In fact, unhealed emotional wounds can powerfully impact your daily life including relationships; therefore, it is important that you begin to learn “emotional first aid” on a daily basis.

Here are five self-care tips that can help you reestablish your emotional recovery.

After counseling & supporting countless survivors of trauma over the years, I wanted to create some easy to understand information.

These articles are meant to offer knowledge & hope for survivors of trauma. It is my belief that KNOWLEDGE + HOPE = EMPOWERMENT. Let’s get started.

What is Trauma?

Trauma occurs when extreme stress, fear, horror or helplessness overwhelms a person’s ability to cope.
If you are a survivor of trauma, you might be experiencing overwhelming emotions, numbness, frightening memories, or the inability to trust others. This is a hard way to live!
