Medical Aid in Dying update. Welcome DE, NY and IL.

Medical aid in dying is currently authorized in 14 U.S. jurisdictions: California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawai‘i, Illinois, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Washington state, and Washington, D.C.

Every law includes strict eligibility and safeguard requirements. To be eligible, an individual must:

- Be an adult (18 years or older)
- Have a terminally-ill prognosis of six months or less to live
- Be able to self-administer their medication through an affirmative, conscious, voluntary act to ingest it.
- Be mentally capable of making an informed healthcare decision

Through education, advocacy, and direct support, Compassion & Choices advances a national access strategy that puts people first. We are here for you, and with your support we are building a future where everyone can access compassionate, patient-directed end-of-life care.

Did you know?

In 2024, over 15,000 people in Canada used Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD). In California? Just 1,032.

Despite legal access since 2016, MAiD remains underutilized here in part because too few doctors participate, and too many people still don’t know it’s an option.

What we’ve learned:
🩺 Only 346 of California’s 150,000+ doctors wrote MAiD prescriptions last year.
🧾 One-third of people who receive the medication never use it—but having it offers peace of mind.
🧓 Most users were already on hospice, died at home, and were living with cancer or other serious illness.
