Announcing 5 new sibling websites:

In addition to my College of Midwives site and Healthcare 2.0 (, I recently developed a complimentary set of smaller, 'sibling' websites for each of the important topics in life -- midwifery, normalizing childbirth practices, and how religious ethics impact national politics. I used WordPress, which provides the opportunity for two-way interactions - blogging comments, requests and feedback. Here's the new list:
(1) Faithgibson.org - The Politics of Normal Childbirth ~ helping to end the Hundred Years War between Midwifery & Medicine
(2) iBirth.org - An educational archive for students & professionals on physiologically-based practices for childbearing in a healthy population
(3) California College of Midwives - Legal, Legislative & Political Issues for CaLMs & relationship w/ our regulatory agency, the Medical Board of California
(4) OneTrueThing.us - "The Middle Way ~ Identifying the best examples of democratic ideals, religious philosophies, and public policies in the interest of social justice & a fair economy
(5) Garden Party Patriotism - People-farming in the garden of democracy, growing American citizenship as an active verb

Would love your feedback. If you find them helpful, 'like' them on FB and spread the word on your email groups.

RE: The anti-planned home birth rant on the Daily Beast -- I just post the 2nd installment of information on my website (faithgibson.org) for anyone interested in making thoughtful and informative comments on Michelle Goldberg's Wednesday's blog: "Home birth - increasingly popular but dangerous".

27/06/2012

As many of you know, a well-respected woman journalist, Michelle Goldberg, just posted a blog on The Daily Beast called "Home Birth: Increasingly popular but dangerous".

It is an account of home birth mfry that did not have a good outcome. According to the description, it was poor care, but I don't have any actual facts so who knows. She also excoriates the CPM credential.

Someone who knew this article was in the works provided me with Ms Goldberg's private e-dress and suggested that I provide helpful information. I sent that email off to Michelle just hours before the piece appeared on-line.

So I just posted the story and the first installment the information I emailed to Ms. Goldberg on my childbirth politics web site (faithgibson.org). Tomorrow and the next day I will post parts 2 and 3 of the information i put together.

I suggest that anyone who feels moved to rebut this misinformation can copy whatever part of this material (large or small) and use it to post a corrective comments on the Daily Beast blog.

It would be helpful if a whole lot of people posted 1 or 2 small paragraphs of useful explanations.

As some of you know, i have already posted information about the safe care provided by California LMs on the California midwives website (california-midwives.com). Some of the information from the LMAR might be helpful.

This is second part of the conversation btw the MD members of the Medical Board on proposed reg #2. That regulation specifically deals with the providing access to the prophylactic and emergency drugs that were incorporated into the LMPA and are necessary to the safe and responsible practice of midwifery in any OOH setting.

12/04/2012

At the Mar 29th "Interested Parties" mtg, Ruth Haskins, former vice-chair of the Mfry Council for 5 years, & Dr. Stuart Fischbein both characterize the practice and political issues surrounding 2 proposed regulation defining the "appropriate level of supervision" as a collaborative relationship and whether this would be acceptable to ACOG and the med-mal carriers (No!)

10/04/2012

Part one (of 4) video/audio of the comments by consumers, lobbyists, obstetricians, mothers and midwives. This section includes Carrier Sparrevohn, Alison Obsborn, Catherine Dower and CMA Lobbyist Ms Chung. NEXT section include great testimony Dr. Fischbein, OB for LA

05/04/2012

Part I (of 2) The staff & attorneys of the Medical Board of California explain proposed mfry regulations about LM-MD collaboration and access to necessary medical supplies, labs & US services, preventative & emergent drugs. Physician ask questions and debate the merits of these issues.

03/04/2012

Seated members of the California Medical Board discuss whether or not to go forward w/ a regulatory hearing for a mfry-related regulation. This reg would permitting LMs to obtain the drugs, medical supplies and order diagnostic/lab tests that they are part of the LMPA's educational curriculum and the mfry standard of care and necessary to the safe practice of out-of hospital-planned home birth (PHB) midwifery

03/04/2012

This regulation is to accompany the LMPA's educational curriculum, which include training in the use of several prophylactics and emergency drugs, as well as the mfry standard of care. The LMPA trains midwives and the Standard describes their appropriate use. However, many medical supply companies will not permit midwives to purchase these drugs. Diagnostic companies and labs often claim that LMs are not authorized to order their medical services ordering. This regulation is to fix that problem.
