This morning I am going to tell you a story.
In clinical practice I am always looking to find the reason behind why the body responds the way it does. During pregnancy the body changes DRAMATICALLY and I can usually figure out the reasons for it. Except nausea and vomiting. I couldn't figure out why a pregnancy would incite nausea and vomiting in a newly pregnant woman when I would think nutrition would be soooo important during this critical time.
I was sharing these thoughts with a mom I was seeing in clinic one day. She had an epiphany. She told me that during lambing season, sheep farmers/herders will put the ewes in fields with sparse vegetation. By doing so the placenta nourishing the lamb would grow larger to create more surface area to capture as much nutrition as possible.
I spent the remainder of the day in awe wrapping my brain around the perfection of that. A mother will experience nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy to stimulate her placenta to grow larger!!!!
Can a body go to extremes though? Yes, in instances of Hyperemesis Gravidarum a mother's body may be a little too overzealous but....that is a conversation for another post.

Did you know.....Cortisol levels are 4 X their prepregnant levels at term!!!!!
Cortisol, best known for "fight or flight" responses, is a hormone produced by your adrenal glands and are responsible for:
1. Reducing inflammatory response
2. Manages how your body uses carbohydrates, fats, and proteins
3. Blood pressure regulation
4. Increases your blood sugar (glucose)
5. Moderates your sleep/wake cycle
6. Boosts energy so you can handle stress and restores balance afterward
What regulates the amount of cortisol you secrete? Located in your brain, your hypothalamus and pituitary gland, can sense if your blood contains the right level of cortisol and will send signals to increase or decrease cortisol based on your daily needs.
Why do you need to know this?
1. Ever wonder why you aren't sleeping in your 3rd trimester. This might be the answer.
2. Wonder how you have the stamina and endurance for an 18 hour labor :0)....this might be the answer.
3. Wonder why your blood sugars might be a little higher in your 3rd trimester?? A normal physiological response so please keep it in mind if you have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
4. Ever wonder why your blood pressure might be a little higher in your 3rd trimester? Your body is doing it's job!!!!!!

Another post to educate women about normal physiological changes during pregnancy so they can make informed decisions about their care!!!!!

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)
A hematologic condition that affects 100,000 women in the US. SCD increases the risk of VTE (Venous thromboembolism).
KNOW YOUR RISK: The combined effect of fluctuating estrogen and progesterone and oral contraceptives (OCPs) during your cycle can increase your risk of experiencing VTE so your provider, out of concern for your health and quality of life, may be hesitant to prescribe oral contraceptives. Consider seeing an herbalist or naturopath for herbal contraceptive remedies including barrier methods. Consider talking to a midwife about help with learning natural family planning techniques such as the calendar/rhythm method, the basal body temperature method, and the cervical mucus method.

I am an old soul crusader with the most powerful weapon known to mankind....endless and limitless LOVE. I am and always will be, free. It is my birthright. I was gifted with a light that was meant to be shared. I have no fear. If my light were needed elsewhere tomorrow, I would gladly shed this body and happily move on to the next adventure. I was put on this earth to share my light through laughter, smiles, joy and fierce, genuine hugs and offer my hand to the gatekeepers of life and humanity.....women.

Nutrient dense, properly prepared foods are a huge piece of the wellness puzzle. We NEED mommas to nourish themselves, to be satiated with delicious whole foods, to have genuine energy from healthy fuel, to fill their bodies with the building blocks for strong bodies and healthy babies. We Do NOT need mommas to diet, to worship the scale, to shame themselves for cravings, to deny themselves nutrients, to overspend on expensive meal replacements, to go hungry in the name of vanity, to treat food as the enemy!

As the New Year approaches and so many evaluate their relationship with food, their self care, their roadmap for new healthy habits . . . Please consider The Restart Program. This five week program is being held on Thursday evenings in January from 6-7:30 at Hall Chiropractic in Placerville. Nicole Pinjuv is a Sacramento Valley Midwifery client and instructor for the course. Please reach out to Nicole at (702)540-9831 with any questions and follow her at nicolepinjuvntc on Facebook to learn more about the class.

Rounding out soup week with a classic and simple tomato soup. I love to use leftover chicken bones to make stock for recipes such as this, but canned or boxed chicken stock would work. Vegetable stock could be used to make it vegetarian.
