On April 12, 1930, the Sacramento Municipal Airport was dedicated and opened with a large celebration that drew 100,000 spectators over a 2-day event. According to The Sacramento Bee newspaper, over 100 planes from the United States Army Air Corps at Mather Field gave spectators “thrill after thrill” with a variety of flying stunts.

The Sacramento Municipal Airport, also known as the Sutterville Aerodrome, replaced a previous airfield at Del Paso Park due to its long distance from Downtown Sacramento. The Sutterville Aerodrome was, after all, located on Freeport Boulevard just 2 miles south of the State Capitol building.

The airport was taken over by the United States Army Air Corps during the Second World War and the airport’s three runways were expanded. After the war, the airport continued to expand but the growing demand for air travel by the 1960s meant Sacramento needed a bigger location. In October 1967, the airport was renamed to Sacramento Executive Airport, when commercial airlines moved to the newly established Sacramento International Airport.
