The Glass Slipper Academy

The Glass Slipper Academy THE GLASS SLIPPER ACADEMY is a job and life skills training program and resource center for adolescent girls in foster-care.

THE CRISIS
Approximately 5,000 children emancipate (age- out) of the system in California each year. Studies show that of the youth who emancipate, 46% drop out of high school and more than 25% are homeless within one day after leaving care at age 18. Nationwide, the number of girls in the correctional system is growing faster than boys. THE GOOD NEWS
Everything we know about development suggests

that vulnerable, ill-served young women – even those who carry a decade of inadequate services and poor behavior – can transform their lives when support is delivered comprehensively, consistently and in ways that respect their voices and build on their strengths. The Glass Slipper Academy prepares adolescent girls in foster-care for independent and productive, successful futures. The following is a sampling of the various skills learned:
- Leadership
- Teamwork
- Communication skills
- Goal-setting
- Budgeting/money-management
- Conflict Resolution
- Problem solving
- Organizational skills
- Meal planning & nutrition

The interaction that naturally occurs in our Hospitality House and Boutique, as well as the exposure to positive role models in an on-the-job setting provides the ideal learning laboratory. The behavioral, social and emotional skills that girls develop will serve them for a lifetime.
