Folsom CERT was at the Folsom Pro Rodeo again this year to provide First Aid and Cooling stations. Temps were about 30 degrees cooler than last year which improved the situation greatly.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) concept was developed and implemented by the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985. The Whittier Narrows earthquake in 1987 underscored the area-wide threat of a major disaster in California. Further, it confirmed the need for training civilians to meet their immediate needs. The program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The CERT program was designed as a grassroots initiative and specifically structured so that the local and state program managers have the flexibility to form their programs in the way that best suits their communities. CERT volunteers are trained to respond safely, responsibly, and effectively to emergency situations, but they can also support their communities during non-emergency events as well.
At the direction of the Folsom Fire Department, Folsom City Community Emergency Response Team (Folsom CERT) can be tasked to provide emergency medical response, search and rescue, triage resources in times of emergencies. For non-emergencies, resources such as first aid tents, cooling stations for City sponsored events such as the Folsom Rodeo are often provided. Folsom CERT also responds for Missing At-Risk Person situations. During extreme weather events one may find Folsom CERT members making welfare checks on residents or working with public works to help reroute traffic and clear drains. In the event of a Mass-Casualty-Incident (MCI) or disaster, Folsom CERT will work under the direction of the Folsom City Fire Department as a ‘force-multiplier’ to free up primary First Responder resources. In the years since September 11, 2001, Federal funding for CERT programs has diminished. Sponsoring agencies are hard-pressed to provide funding to keep CERT organizations going. Friends of Folsom CERT (FoFCERT) is a California 501(c)(3) Non-Profit which does fundraising in Support of the Folsom CERT mission. 100% of the funds and resources donated to FoFCERT go directly to purchasing materials and services for Folsom CERT.
