As we celebrate Black History Month, we’re recognizing pioneers like Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller who have resisted injustice to create more well-being for all. Dr. Fuller was a pioneering neurologist, pathologist and psychologist who published game changing discoveries about Alzheimer’s disease in 1912 – research that continues to inform treatments today.

A visit to the emergency room can often come with stress, worry, and uncertainty — that’s why we’re so grateful for team members like Gracie Silva, one of our nurses at Adventist Health Howard Memorial, who consistently goes above and beyond to put patients at ease and care for them with genuine compassion.

Recently, we received messages of gratitude for Gracie and we're proud to highlight the great care she provides:

"She is a star. So compassionate about their work and totally cares. She's so sweet and nice and you can tell all she does is care about who they are taking care of. You just know she has your back, not to mention how much you know she cares. God bless her!”

"Gracie was kind, efficient, fast and communicative. She spoke with the patient with kindness, telling him what she was doing even though he was a bit foggy. She was very caring and gentle with him. She cared for him all night. She explained everything to me and why, which I wanted to know. She looked out for our needs all night and made us feel like we were her only patient."

Thank you, Gracie, for being there for our community in their time of need, for the exceptional care you provide, and for the comfort and reassurance you bring to every patient you serve.

What an amazing time at APTA 2026!

With thousands of passionate physical therapy professionals, we were energized by the conversations, questions, and shared commitment to advancing patient care.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Adventist Health booth to connect with our team. We met future PT leaders and clinicians looking for their next chapter.

At Adventist Health, we’re focused on building environments where physical therapists can thrive, clinically, professionally, and personally.

Have you heard of Dr. Louis T. Wright? Not only was Dr. Wright the first African American on the surgical staff of a non-segregated hospital in New York City and a dedicated civil rights leader, he also developed the intradermal injection technique for vaccinating soldiers against smallpox while serving in the armed forces during World War I. As we celebrate Black History Month, we’re celebrating leaders like Dr. Wright who have resisted injustice to create more well-being for all.

Our Story

We owe much of our heritage and organizational success to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which has long been a promoter of prevention and whole person care. Inspired by our belief in the loving and healing power of Jesus Christ, we aim to bring physical, mental and spiritual health and healing to our neighbors of all faiths. Every individual, regardless of his/her personal beliefs, is welcome in our facilities. We are also eager to partner with members of other faiths to enhance the health of the communities we serve.
