Huge thank you to the task force and to for helping spark these important conversations and inspiring many of us to start thinking about what licensure could look like here in California.

This is about protecting the children and families we serve both in hospitals and in community based settings by ensuring they receive care from properly trained and qualified Certified Child Life Specialists. It’s also about protecting the integrity and future of our profession.

Thank you so much to Belinda Hammond for reaching out and asking if I’d be interested in being part of these discussions. I’m honored and ready to help be part of the change.

This is why Child Life matters. ❤️

Children are capable of understanding hard things when they are given honest, developmentally appropriate support and a safe space to process their experiences.

After experiencing the cancer journey and death of a loved one, this child and I worked together to help him understand what was happening, express difficult emotions, and build healthy coping skills through conversation, play, and creative expression.

Later, I learned that he used those same coping skills to help support another child who was grieving.

That ripple effect is powerful.

The goal is not for children to depend on us forever. It’s to help them build tools they can carry into future stressors, grief, and life experiences and maybe even use those tools to support others someday. ❤️

And the truth is… it can be easier to look away than to sit in it.

But there is power in showing up.
In witnessing.
In holding space when things feel impossible.

It’s an honor to walk alongside them.
Because no family should ever have to face this alone.

We want to see our field thrive, not just survive.

Let me start by saying this isn’t about speaking negatively about Certified Child Life Specialists. This is about voicing very real concerns that many of us have been experiencing for years.

We want this field to grow. To reach every hospital, every hospice agency, every community program serving children and families. Because kids deserve that level of support everywhere.

But the truth is, there are serious fractures in our field… and many people are unaware of them.

I’m so excited to share two upcoming events next week benefiting local pediatric cancer organizations.

The first event will be April 23, 24, and 25 at for their SFL Swim Championships.

The high school club .buddies.gbhs will be selling sweet treats and accepting donations to benefit .

These donations will help support pediatric cancer patients in our community and beyond through Unicorn Bravery Kits, in-home child life services, and direct contributions to research.

It truly takes a village to show up for these families, and this is such a powerful example of a community coming together to make a difference. If you’re local, come out, support, and be part of something meaningful 💛

This isn’t just a Texas problem… it’s happening across the U.S.

Hospitals are hiring unqualified individuals and calling them “Child Life Specialists” — often at a lower rate.

That is not Child Life.
And it’s detrimental to the psychosocial and emotional care families deserve.

Kids deserve trained, certified professionals during the hardest moments of their lives.

We need change — now.
And if we can make it happen in one state, others will follow.
