Did you take part in Global Recycling Day over the weekend? Don't worry if you missed it — you can make a difference every day of the year.

We encourage you to recognize the importance recycling plays in preserving our planet and resources. Take the extra time to make an impact by recycling commonly used items, finding new ways to reuse items before discarding them and inviting others to do the same. Reuse and recycle!

Listed below are a few common items that can be recycled and reused:

Books – donate to charities, libraries, schools and used bookstores
Clothing, shoes and bedding – donate to local non-profits and used clothing stores
Batteries – look for local battery drop off locations, often found at libraries and post offices
Packing materials – many shipping companies take back old packing materials for reuse
Plastic bags – reuse and then deposit in plastic bag recycling bins, found at many grocery stores

· Before the storm, check that tires and windshield wipers are in good condition

· Reduce your speed

· Allow more time and distance to adequately brake and stop

· If your vehicle starts to hydroplane, take your foot off the accelerator, but do not hit your brakes

· Turn on your headlights

· Avoid standing water and flooded areas

You may have caught the winter storm warnings for California this week ... are you prepared? https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/20/weather/winter-storm-blizzard-monday-wxn/index.html

Winds are expected to pick up tomorrow. Before the rain makes an entrance later this week, we're looking at weather reports indicating 25-30 mph winds tomorrow with some gusts reaching 50 mph. Consider the following:

· Postponing outdoor activities
· Stand clear of roadways and train tracks; a gust could blow you into the path of a vehicle
· Use handrails where available on walkways; avoid elevated areas such as roofs that lack railings
· Watch for flying debris
· Securing loose items, tarps, lawn furniture and other outside objects near homes and businesses
· Checking on pets to make sure they have adequate shelter and are protected
· Report downed power lines – and avoid them
· While driving, be aware, watch for objects that might blow into your path; pull on to the shoulder and stop if conditions get too severe
