Have you heard of the end-of-summer-scaries or September scaries? Transition from summer to fall can be difficult for some causing anxiety and other noticeable symptoms. While these typically resolve after a period of time there are a few things that can help with these feelings. Here are some tips:
1. Create a routine and remember to include fun things too. Adults and children do well with structure.
2. Plan something to look forward to. Fun doesn't end just because summer does.
3. If your transition includes starting something new like going to college or starting a new job or for a kiddo starting at a new school, do your research. Prepare by gathering a map of the new school or visit the new job site before the first day.
4. Self-care. Get good sleep, eat well, and get hydrated. Listen to your body.
5. Take a different perspective. Change can be exciting and challenges are good! When we view something as exciting rather than as stressful we feel more confident in facing the challenge. Remind yourself you have the right tools or the supports to help you get them.
6. Reach out to your supports (family, friends, coworkers, support groups to name a few). Connecting socially with others is a pillar of happiness and wellbeing, especially in times of change.
7. Bring summer like activities into the colder months or find new activities that get you excited about fall and winter. If you like rollerblading give ice skating a try. Do you like tubing on the lake, try tubing down a snowy hill!
8. Stay off social media or decrease time on it. Social media often leads to comparison to others lives which does not help with self-esteem or confidence.
9. Set a goal new goal. Doing so gives you something positive to focus on and work towards.
10. Connect with a Mental Health Professional. Sometimes the scaries are more than difficulty during transitions and a trained therapist can help.
