Some ideas for how to target functional words 🗣️

What’s in your bag of tricks?!? Let’s share below ⬇️

Do you see a pattern with the words listed? Highly functional words are words that can be used across contexts to help your child get more wants and needs met and help reduce their frustration.

Communication requires motivation! Some of these may work better than others depending on what your child likes!

Here’s some strategies for teaching these words-

🌟model one word at a time 3-5x, then PAUSE & give them some space to try.
🌟pair with a sign or gesture.
🌟use a visual or consider introducing AAC if appropriate (my activity deck has more on this!!)
🌟exaggerate the vowels when modeling the words as OOOO may be easier to model at first than OPEN
