We join the Montgomery County Sheriffs Office and the members of the Amsterdam Fire Department as we mourn the loss of retired firefighter/paramedic and MCSO 911 communicator Rob Shang. Rob has been a dedicated public servant to the citizens Montgomery County for more than two and a half decades. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family during this difficult time.

🚑 SAVAC EMS has a problem… and it’s a VERY rare one.

We currently have…

👀 Too many Paramedics.
😳 Not enough EMTs.

Yes… you read that right.

Some agencies struggle to staff ALS coverage.
Meanwhile over here our paramedics are basically looking around like:

👉 “So… who’s gonna drive?”
👉 “Anyone need an IV started just for fun?”
👉 “We could do another training… again…”

In all seriousness — this is actually a great problem to have and speaks to the strong growth, training culture, and commitment to high-level patient care at SAVAC EMS.

But now we need to build up our EMT ranks to keep our trucks fully staffed and our crews responding efficiently.

If you’re an EMT, now is the time to join a progressive, supportive, and busy EMS agency.

We love seeing our community members… but we’d prefer it be at the grocery store or a ball game — not always the back of our ambulance. 😄

Emergency medical services are here 24/7 for true emergencies, when every second counts. Things like chest pain, severe bleeding, difficulty breathing, or someone who is unconscious are exactly why we’re here.

For less serious medical issues — things like minor injuries, colds, lingering aches, or routine health concerns — your primary care provider or an urgent care center is usually the best place to get the care you need.

Using the right level of care helps keep ambulances available for those critical moments when someone in our community truly needs emergency help.

Take a quick look at the guide below to help decide when to call 911 and when another option might be better.

And remember… if you’re ever truly unsure, don’t hesitate to call for help. That’s what we’re here for.

How we started....

St. Johnsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps was founded on November 26, 1968. A group of local community members gathered at the St. Johnsville Community House and discussed the need for a volunteer Ambulance Corp. Mayor Angelo Giaquinto presided over the meeting. At this meeting the very first Board of Directors was appointed, consisting of Robert Perry, Joe Green, Frank Christiance, Joe Rider, John Bilobrowka, Carmine Giaquinto and Carlo Polidori.

At the time the local funeral directors would use a hearse to transport the sick and injured to the local hospital.

After several months of hard work, St. Johnsville Volunteer Ambulance opened the “ambulance doors” on January 1, 1969.

They needed to start the engine up quickly as the first “activation” for a call came on January 1, 1969 with an automobile accident at the Old Mill Inn on Rt 5. This Inn no longer stands but the old log books tell us that the first crew to answer the call were J. Bilobrowka, K. Mereness and G. Jubar. The log book indicates that 3 patients were transported to Little Falls Hospital.
