Maternal deaths are largely preventable, but MN still experiences nearly 18 pregnancy-related deaths per 100,000 live births (about 1 in 5,600). That is unacceptably high, & Black + American Indian people are disproportionately impacted.

Family physicians play a vital role in maternal health — providing prenatal care, deliveries & postpartum care across the state, especially in rural + underserved communities.

“I have been a practicing physician for more than 19 years here in MN, & I have never seen this level of chaos & fear in health care for patients & our health care teams.” — Roli Dwivedi, MD, FAAFP, MAFP Immediate Past President

Today, MAFP members + leaders joined Dr. Alice Mann For MN State Senate, Senator Matt Klein, M.D. & other MN physicians to share how "Operation Metro Surge" is impacting patient care in MN.

Stories included:
➡️ A cancer patient detained & moved to Texas without meds.
➡️ A diabetic patient rationing insulin + food.
➡️ A pregnant patient laboring alone at home out of fear.
➡️ A missed follow-up turning into a life-threatening emergency.
➡️ A mother & son “forcefully separated” in a clinic parking lot while trying to fill a prescription for a seizure med. The trauma of the incident triggered a medical crisis, with the son being rushed to the hospital & the mom sent to a detention center in Texas.

Dwivedi: “I have dozens of other stories to share, but the bottom line is, is this making America healthy again?”
