I recently met with a client who when sat down I noticed had a different look to them. Now this is a client I have been meeting with for a while. They had originally reached out to work through their chronic depression, suicidal ideation, and isolation. What was different about this individual came to light as we explored current feelings, thoughts, and emotions. They proceeded to share that they were feeling different, feeling lighter. When asked to define what that meant to them, they were able to say, feeling as if they could breathe, "feeling free like a bird." We continued to explore these feelings and what that was like for them. Acknowledging this has been a long-time struggle for this individual - practicing isolation, longing for more, feeling buried under their depression and all too often as their life wasn’t worth living - tears welled up in their eyes and they shared, “I just thought this was who I was, I thought I was depression.”
This comment is why I share this with you. You don’t have to be your struggle. Your struggles are merely symptoms of something deeper. You are a unique individual with gifts, talents, strengths, weaknesses, beliefs, and dreams. You come with unique experiences that only you can know and feel. But often, I see individuals attach meaning and purpose to the struggle instead of the unique person. So, to meet with this client and witness that this awareness has been brought forth and has lifted them out of a place they believed they’d always be in, was significant.
Now there are still struggles and concerns this client is working through but what's different now is they feel as if they can overcome these struggles. More importantly, they acknowledge that they aren’t their struggles and therefore, make all of it much more manageable. With this understanding we can confront the struggles, dissect them, problem-solve, understand, build awareness, and ultimately move forward in life to be the unique and gifted individual that they are intended to be.
I hope this message touches anyone who believes they are their struggle. If that's you, if you feel that you are your depression, anxiety, ADHD, addiction, trauma, etc, you are not that. You are a purposefully and uniquely created individual [that struggles in certain ways//areas] who is worthy and deserving of confidence, joy, meaning, connection, belonging, and much more. It’s all yours to be had. It’s up to you to decide just how important that is to you.
I wish you well.
Take care of you.
