Let's talk : Port
Port is a sweet fortified wine from Portugal. It is most commonly found in red varieties, although there are some white ports on the market.
Port was invented in the Douro Valley of Northern Portugal. The wine is fortified with aguardiente, which boosts the wine's alcohol and sugar content.
The term "Aguardiente" covers a broad variety of spirits consumed along the Iberian Peninsula. It can be made with oranges, grapes, bananas, rice, etc. and typically contains 30% and 60% ABV. Port is most commonly made with grape aguardiente, which is also known as brandy.
The resulting wine is very strong, and very sweet. It is usually served alongside dessert, to be sipped slowly.
Although fortified wines are produced all over the world, port has a Protected Designation of Origin. This means that, according to the European Union's PDO guidelines, only wines from Portugal may be labelled "port".
