This is a follow up to the last post.
The video of her jumping on her knees when she was 3.

My goodness some of y’all can get worked up. ☺️

Some of the comments were very clear that some of you didn’t read the post all the way thru.

Julia did the jumping on her knees at age THREE. She is 9 now & we’ve come a long way. 🙌🏻

We’re fully aware of the W sitting & issues that can cause. Again, we’ve come a long way. 🙌🏻

It absolutely was a stim for her. It just was what it was. There was no stopping it as we most times we didn’t know when she was going to do it. 🤦🏻‍♀️

There was a comment about the “dangerous wires”. Well my goodness. If we were recording her, we were fully aware of the wires & watching her closely. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Someone said the knee jumping needs “to stop now”. Well, if you’d read the post, you’d know it did a long time ago. 😂

Nevertheless, we appreciate all of y’all. 🥰

This video is from 6 years ago. Julia was 3. Her official diagnosis is Level 3 Nonverbal Autism with Sensory Processing Disorder. She is a sensory seeker. She seeks out things to get sensory input.

There were many, many, many times she would do this, especially during a meltdown - and it was rarely in carpet. She didn’t care if it was hardwood, tile, or concrete. She did it enough to the point I was concerned and asked her doctor about it. He reassured me that, thankfully, her knees were cartilage at that time!

She hasn’t done this in quite a while, thank God, & I pray it stays that way. 🙏🏻

Some of the world’s most celebrated chefs — including Bobby Flay — have come together for a fundraising gala with one goal: expanding employment pathways for autistic adults in the culinary industry.

The event, which brought together Michelin-starred chefs and hospitality leaders, raised funds for programmes that provide real kitchen training and paid work placements for autistic job seekers.

Unemployment and underemployment remain serious issues in the autistic community, with studies suggesting autistic adults face some of the highest jobless rates of any disability group.

The initiative aims to change that — one kitchen at a time.

The best chefs know that every great dish starts with the right team.

This has been Julia’s little two-step dance she’s done since she was about 5. That’s how she dances with everybody. 🥰

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS

It has been brought to my attention that we need to be looking very carefully at who the admins are for the autism pages we follow.

I’ve posted 2 pictures that show an autism group I no longer follow & the admins for that page. I can’t think of any good reason middle aged men from overseas would be running a page labeled Autism Moms.

Julia received a Superhero award. There will be a second post with that video!
Also, in these pics you’ll see Julia wearing gloves. Anytime Julia has a meltdown, she wrings & claws her own hands. ABA has started putting gloves on her to prevent her from tearing her hands up when she has a meltdown. It seems to be working & this is HUGE because Julia doesn’t like anything in her hands!

So true!

So true!

Today is World Autism Awareness Day. The world isn’t an easy place for people like my daughter Abbie. It’s gotten better no doubt through accommodations, education, and acceptance but there’s still a long way to go. Research, studies and early intervention are all crucial to the autism community. However we can’t keep allowing adults with disabilities to be forgotten about. The majority of our lives are lived as adults but the majority of the resources end after childhood. On this April 2nd I want the world to be aware that autism grows up.

Julia’s Journey

We are a family of 5. Brian (Dad), Susan (Mom), Kenleigh (oldest child), Julia (middle child), and Hayleigh (youngest child). There are 12 years between Kenleigh & Julia & 2.5 years between Julia & Hayleigh. Julia was born 2 months early due to pregnancy complications. She only spent 14 days in the NICU (thank God). We started noticing delays in milestones which lead us to a referral and ultimately a diagnoses of Nonverbal Autism & Sensory Processing Disorder at the age of 2. We have learned that with Autism, communication is everything. So being nonverbal makes it a little harder. We believe and feel strongly that things would be a lot better for her and us if she could talk. She’s been through programs and we pray. A LOT. We wholeheartedly believe that one day she will talk.

We have created this page to raise awareness for Autism. Hopefully one day they’ll be able to do more to help people like Julia. We are also here to show you the good, the bad, the ugly, & everything in between. Being Julia’s parents is very hard some days but it is ALWAYS worth it. She has taught us so much in a short amount of time that it amazes us every day.
