In March we recognize National Colorectal Cancer Month to raise awareness for colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States, behind only lung cancer. The incidence of colon cancer has been rising for at least the last two decades. The American Cancer Society recommends screening for colon cancer begin at age 45. Those with a family history should contact their physician about beginning screening earlier. Unfortunately, many people forgo colon cancer screening due to convenience, cost, availability, and embarrassment. This is unfortunate as colorectal cancer should be a largely preventable illness. Experts believe that over 90% of all localized colorectal cancers can be cured through early detection and treatment. Getting checked can’t wait. If you are not a candidate for a traditional colonoscopy, Peninsula Imaging offers a non-invasive procedure to screen for colon cancer – virtual colonoscopy – which uses CT scanning to obtain an interior view of the colon.
