Ali’s Allies

Ali’s Allies Alicia (or Ali) seized on November 5, 2024. The seizure didn’t stop & she coded twice. She’s supposed to be basically brain dead. Our 🌈🦄 girl didnt get the memo.

She is awake & has started interacting. Updates are here (when I manage to post.)💜

Super alert and aware when she’s awake but extremely calm and comfortable when she’s not. New normal I guess?

Talking about the options and differences now that she’s completely dislocated that hip. That changes things a bit.

The whole team is involved in going over the options and they are really thinking outside the box. It’s very nice.

PT is back almost daily which is nice because while I do it daily it’s nice to have them do it too so they can track her progress. OT is also still working with her. We’ve got a new nurse too that we are liking. New nurse manager we are adjusting to. Lots of good progress.

Yes she’s enjoying having her lights back. She’s still not quite settled down. I think it might be the harder bed. We will be talking to the NP tomorrow about medication and other options to make sure she’s as comfortable as possible. We did get a second opinion on her hip this hospital trip. So that gave us some options to discuss. She’s definitely alert and active though.

Back at the facility and she’s been mostly comfortable. Meds were late with the transfer back so we are playing some music. Apparently this is a new favorite to help calm her. 🌈💜🎶

We are here til Friday. We are in the ICU because that’s the only way to give her the medication. Literally. This is how insurance works. They will pay for this medication in the Neuro/Thoracic/Cardiac/Shock Trauma ICU (we’ve been in all of those now). But won’t just send her back to the facility with the medication. She is completely fine & stable & is ONLY in the ICU to receive this antibiotic. Insane.

We may keep her to finish her antibiotics. I will talk to management in the morning and see what they think but it might be easier than trying to get it from the pharmacy for the last 24-36 hours of her meds.

This hospitalization was triggered by a bad reaction to Milk of Magnesia. Which we started because she reacted badly to prune juice. Which we were trying because insurance refused to pay for Movantik. So it’s been one thing after another.

We did get another opinion on her hip this hospitalization just to make sure there was not anything more we could do about it. We had a great doctor this time who is also looking at her immune system and looking into some other treatment options to keep her healthy. We were very lucky this time around.

So the milk of magnesia sent us in but pneumonia was discovered once we got there like from the prune juice making her sick last week. So that’s why she’s stayed. The antibiotics she’s on arent a common one. So it really just might be easier this way. She really is so bored she’s watching her own vitals though.

She’s much calmer today. I thought they sedated her.

She’s been calm since she’s been here. I went to get some things for her and while I was gone they changed 2/3 of her pain meds to as needed. She can’t request them. That’s why they are scheduled. We don’t do PRN meds with her we’ve figured out what works and stick with it. This hospitalization is due to messing with her meds. Don’t mess with her meds. So I’m stuck here until I get that fixed. Not risking them not giving them to her. Not worth the risk.

Why haven’t I learned by now not to make posts about things like turning a corner and things are looking up?

It always bites me.

At IMC.
Fever.
High vitals.
Will be pushing for as short a stay as possible.
Symptoms responded to treatment so we suspect a long stay isn’t needed.

We had a rough week but we’ve turned the corner and decorated for spring instead of Easter. So we are ready for normal spring temperatures now. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We have a new, lower heartrate as a new normal after a steroid hip injection (she didn’t even flinch) Tuesday kicked in. We are pretty excited.

Also Easterfied her room, which she’s not impressed by as she prefers her shamrocks.

Switched out the vent (23 hours after we said it needed to be done) and she’s instantly fine and back to her normal vitals.

I’m not impressed it took that long to get it done. But I’m thrilled it’s done now and that the RTs fought to do it. Even though they are taking heat for it now.
