: Nutrition 🍎🍏

Plant-Based diets are a huge trend right now and for good reason. A multitude of research articles have been and are being written on eating with a focus of making most choices plant based.

General health improvements have been seen for those suffering from certain diseases such as heart disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression and/or obesity. Studies show that only 5% of people in the US meet the recommended daily fiber target of 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men. Fiber is an important nutrient that helps us control our blood sugars, lowers cholesterol, improves gut health, reduces risk of heart disease and reduces risk of colon cancer, and can help with weight management.

Challenge yourself to increasing your fiber by increasing the servings of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes/beans you eat daily. Try and aim for half your plate being fruits/vegetables, ¼ being plant protein (legumes, beans, nuts, seeds, soy product), and ¼ whole grain.

: Physical Activity 💪

Sedentary lifestyles and a lack of daily physical activity are widespread, but evidence shows that can reduce risk of breast, colorectal and endometrial cancer. Being active also helps prevent excess weight gain. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity 5 times per week!

: Sleep as a pillar of Lifestyle Medicine is a vital, often neglected, component of every person's overall health and well-being 🧠😴💤

Sleep is important because it enables the body to repair and be fit and ready for another day. Getting adequate rest may also help prevent excess weight gain, heart disease, and increased illness duration.

This week is Lifestyle Medicine Week!

is a global celebration of healthy behaviors and a public awareness campaign on the impact our choices can have on chronic disease. Lifestyle medicine can address up to 80% of chronic diseases.

A lifestyle medicine approach to population care has the potential to arrest the decades-long rise in the prevalence of chronic conditions and their burdensome costs. Patient and provider satisfaction often results from a lifestyle medicine approach, which strongly aligns the field with the Quintuple Aim of better health outcomes, lower cost, improved patient satisfaction, improved provider well-being, and advancement of health equity, in addition to its alignment with planetary health.

Lifestyle medicine is the foundation for a redesigned, value-based and equitable healthcare delivery system, leading to whole person health.

Nasal congestion and swelling, facial pressure, pain, fever, too much mucus. Ugh. It’s probably another sinus infection. Or is it? And is your infection caused by a virus or bacteria — and does it really matter?
It does! Doctors treat viral and bacterial sinus infections very differently. Here’s what you need to know about both kinds of infections and how to treat them 🤧

Viral or bacterial?
Sinusitis happens when your sinuses — the normally air-filled pockets in your face — become inflamed and blocked. Most sinus infections are viral 🦠

How can you tell whether your infection is viral or bacterial based on your symptoms?
You can’t!
Symptoms like bad breath, yellow or green mucus, fever and headache are not reliable signs of a bacterial infection. They can occur with viral infections, too. Even your doctor can’t tell if your infection is viral or bacterial based solely on symptoms or an exam.
Instead, your doctor looks largely at symptom duration to determine the source of your infection. A viral sinus infection will usually start to improve after five to seven days. A bacterial sinus infection will often persist for seven to 10 days or longer, and may actually worsen after seven days 🤒

Steps you can take?
Whether your sinus infection turns out to be viral or bacterial, you can help to ease your symptoms early on with supportive sinus care:
1. Use saline spray two to three times per day in each nostril.
2. Use a nasal decongestant such as Afrin®, but not longer than three days.
3. Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid per day.
4. Get plenty of rest.
5. Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to help relieve the swelling of your sinuses 👃
