Let’s stop treating protein like it’s the only.
We’ve been conditioned to believe that if a meal isn’t 90% protein, it’s a “failure.” We’ve turned a vital nutrient into a moral obsession—and for those in binge recovery, this hyper-focus is often just diet culture.
As a weight-neutral dietitian, here is the truth your brain needs to hear: Protein is the building block, but it can’t build a house without the fuel and the foundation.
Why we need the “Other Guys” just as much:
* CARBS are Brain Fuel 🧠: Your brain runs almost exclusively on glucose. When you restrict carbs in favor of “just protein,” your brain sends out massive hunger signals (binge urges) because it’s literally starving for quick energy.
* FATS are Hormone Heroes 🌿: You need dietary fat to absorb Vitamins A, D, E, and K. Fat is also what tells your brain “I’m satisfied and full.” Without it, you’ll finish a high-protein meal and still feel hungry.
* VARIETY is Binge Protection 🛡️: Restriction is the #1 predictor of a binge. When we moralize protein and demonize the rest, we create a “forbidden fruit” effect that leads straight to a cycle of guilt.
The Goal: Moving from “Is there enough protein?” to “Is this meal satisfying, nourishing, and complete?”
You deserve a relationship with food that doesn’t require a calculator. ✨
