Community Service Learning (CSL) at Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics

Community Service Learning (CSL) at Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics Service learning is defined as a structured learning experience that combines community service with preparation and reflection.

The Community Engaged Learning (CEL) program connects learners from across UT Health San Antonio with the community to innovate human-centered solutions designed to tackle homelessness, poverty, health literacy and more. Students engaged in service-learning provide community service in response to community-identified concerns and learn about the context in which service is provided, the connection between their service and their academic coursework, and their roles as citizens and professionals.

Upcoming Texas Health Institute Convenings (Informational)

Also in follow-up to our meeting yesterday, I wanted to provide some information regarding two (2) upcoming convenings of the Texas Health Institute (THI, https://texashealthinstitute.org/). THI is a health policy/public health “think tank”-like organization that seeks “to lead collaborative efforts and facilitate connections to foster systems that provide the opportunity for everyone to lead a healthy life.” The two convenings are as follows:

• Health Integration Leadership Convening – Wednesday, October 23, 9:30am-3pm; being held at UT Health SA

• Texas Health Policy Forum – Thursday, December 5, 9am-4pm; being held at Hyatt Regency Austin

Please refer to the attached emails for additional information – and I’ve inserted hyperlinks to the registration webpages above.

Events hosted by THI are often attended by a variety of health care stakeholders to include provider groups, advocacy organizations, leadership from the UT System, and other academic institutions. I have found prior meetings to be incredibly informational and engaging. I could see UT Health SA faculty and students having interest in attending. I believe the first event (the one at UTHSCA) is free but the second forum regarding health policy has a cost.

At the Texas Health Policy Forum, thought leaders from diverse backgrounds will identify common goals, share perspectives, and foster alignment on recommendations to address the state’s pressing health challenges. Together, we will advance broadly shared policy priorities related to population hea...
